TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE


1. Mark hood hinges and hood for alignment, then remove hood.

2. Relieve fuel pressure as follows:

  a. Remove fuel cap to relieve tank pressure.

  b. Remove cap from fuel pressure relief valve located on fuel line in upper righthand corner of engine
compartment, then release pressure from system using EFI pressure gauge tool No. T80L-9974-B,
or equivalent.

3. Remove mounting bolts and radiator.

4. Remove air cleaner outlet tube.

5. Disconnect engine electrical connector, PCM electrical connector, and PCM ground, Fig. 1.

6. Disconnect engine ground strap at cowl.

7. Disconnect A/C high pressure switch connector, then the manifold line from compressor.

8. Disconnect fuel lines and heater hoses.

9. Raise and support vehicle.

10. Remove starter electrical connections, then the starter.

11. Drain engine oil into suitable container, then install drain plug.

12. Disconnect both oxygen sensors and pipes from exhaust manifolds.

13. Disconnect electrical harness connector at transmission.


14. Disconnect transmission cooler line bracket and A/C line bracket and position aside.

15. Remove A/C line bracket and position to one side.

16. Disconnect power steering return and pressure hoses.

17. Disconnect vapor management valve hose connector, Fig. 2.

18. Remove transmission bolts, then lower vehicle.

19. Remove both motor mount nuts.

20. Carefully raise and remove engine.

21. Remove crankshaft pulley and front oil seal.

22. Remove front cover components in sequence, Fig. 3.

23. Apply silicone gasket and sealant in two places, Fig. 4.

24. Remove timing chain and gear cassettes in sequence, Fig. 5.

25. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

  a. Torque engine front cover to 14 ft. lbs.

  b. Torque jackshaft chain guide to 14 ft. lbs.

  c. Torque jackshaft chain tensioner to 89 inch lbs.
