ASSIGNMENT - 1

COMPUTER AIDED ANALYSIS AND DESIGN - LAB

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Draw a reinforced concrete multistory building model in ETABS

SUBMITTED TO : ENGR. USMAN RASHEED

SUBMITTED BY: MARRIAM KHALID

REG NO: 19-CE-107
SEC: C

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

UET TAXILA
ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:

Number of Storys:

Number of Story = 2+Rx0.1 (Round off number of story e.g. If R =129 then Number of story
=2 + 129x0.1 = 15)

Story Height:

Bottom Story Height = 10ft

Typical story height = 12ft

Grid Dimensions:

Number of Grids lines both in X and Y direction = 2+Rx0.1

X Direction Grid Size: 10+RX0.1 (Round off it.)

Y Direction Grid Size:

01+2+Rx0.1 (For Sec-A)

01+4+Rx0.1 (For Sec-B)

01+6+Rx0.1 (For Sec-C)

01+8+Rx0.1 (For Sec-D)

Where R is your registration number.

Compressive strength of Concrete:

For Beams / Columns = 5000psi

For Slabs = 3500psi.

Suppose missing data if any.

CALCULATIONS:

Number of Story:

Number of Story = 2+ R x 0.1

= 2 + 107 x 0.1

= 12.7  13

Story Height:

Bottom Story Height = 10 ft

Typical Story Height = 12 ft

Grid Dimensions:

Number of Grids lines both in X and Y direction = 2+Rx0.1

= 2+107x0.1

= 12.7  13

X Direction Grid Size = 10+RX0.1

= 10+107x0.1

=20.7  21

Y Direction Grid Size = 01+6+Rx0.1 (For Sec-C)

=01+6+107x0.1

=17.7  18
PROCEDURE

1. Creating New Model

Open ETABS and click on New Model, a Model Initialization Window will open. In this
window, select Use Built in Settings Option and select OK.

2. Defining Story and Grid Dimensions

A window of New Model Quick Template will open. In this window, we will insert our
calculated data as Story Dimensions >
Number of stories = 16,
Typical Story Height = 12 ft, Bottom Story Height = 10 ft and
Grid dimensions >
Number of Grids lines in X Direction = 16, Number of Grids lines in Y Direction = 16,
Spacing of Grids in X Direction = 14, Spacing of Grids in X Direction = 21
3. Defining Materials
Now we have to define Materials. Go to Menu bar and click Define > Material
Properties. A Define Material window will open.
For 5000 psi Concrete

In Define Materials window, click Add New Material > Region : United states > Material
Type : Concrete > Standard : Customary > Grade: fc’ 5000 psi

Material Property Data window will open. Change Material name : 5000 psi > Click
Modify/Show Material Property Design Data.. option
Material Property Design Data window will open. Change Specified Concrete
Compressive Strength fc’ = 5000 psi and Grade = fc’ 5000 psi > OK.
For 3500 psi Concrete

Add copy of material > Material Name : 3500 psi > Modify/Show Material Property Design
Data > Material Name : 3500 psi > Grade : fc’ 3500 psi > Specified concrete Compressive
Strength : 3500 > OK
For Grade 40 Steel

Add New Material > Material Type : Rebar > Standard : ASTM A615 > Grade : 40 > OK

In Material Property Data window

4. Defining Section Properties
Define > Section Properties > Frame Sections
Frame Property Window
Add New Property

Frame Property Shape Type Window

Shape Type > Concrete Rectangular

Frame Section Property Data Window

For Column

Frame Section Property Data Window

Property Name : Col 24” x 24 “ > Material : 5000 psi > Section Dimensions : 24” both >
Modify/Show Rebars > Design Type: Concrete Column > Longitudinal bars: Grade 60 >
Confinement bars: Grade 40 > Longitudinal Bar Size: #6 > Corner Bar Size and Area: #6 >
Confinement Bar Size and Area: #4 > OK
For Beam

Frame Section Property Data Window

Property Name : Beam 24” x 24“ > Material : 5000 psi > Section Dimensions : 24” x 24” >
Modify/Show Rebars > Design Type: Beam > Longitudinal bars: Grade 60 > Confinement
bars: Grade 40 > OK
5. Defining Slab Sections
Define > Section Properties > Slab Sections
Slab Property Window
Add New Property > Property Name: Slab 6” > Slab Material: 3500 psi > Slab
thickness: 6” > OK
6. Drawing Columns
Draw > Draw Beams/Columns/Brace Objects > Quick Draw Column
Bottom Left Properties of Object Window
Select Property: Column 15” x 15”
Select all stories from the bottom right > Draw columns
7. Drawing Beams
Draw > Draw Beams/Columns/Brace Objects > Quick Draw Beams/Column
Bottom Left Properties of Object Window
Select Property: Beam 15” x 18” > Draw Beams
8. Drawing Slab
Draw > Draw Floor/Wall Objects > Quick Draw Floor/Wall
Bottom Left Properties of Object Window
Select Property: Slab 6” > Draw Slabs
Remove slabs from the base story
