OXYGENATION

OXYGEN
- Clear odorless gas
- 21% of air we breathe
- Necessary for proper functioning of all living cells
- Absence can lead to cellular, tissue, and organism death
RESPIRATION
- Process of gas exchange between individual & environment. Involve 4 components:
❖ Ventilation(breathing): movement of air (inhale or exhale)
❖ Alveolar-capillary gas exchange: diffusion of O2 & CO2 between tissues & lungs
❖ Transport of O2 & CO2 between tissues & lungs
❖ O2 & CO2 movement between systemic capillaries & tissues
STRUCTURE OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
UPPER
● Mouth
● Nose
● Pharynx
● Larynx
LOWER
● Trachea
● Lungs
● Bronchioles
● Alveoli
● Pulmonary Capillary Network
● Pleural Membranes

PHARYNX
- Shared pathway for air & food
- Includes nasopharynx & oropharynx, richly supplied with lymphoid tissue that traps and
destroys pathogens entering with air
LARYNX
- Important for maintaining airway patency and protecting lower airways from swallowed
food and fluids
EPIGLOTTIS
- During swallowing, closes routing food to esophagus. Open during breathing, allowing
air to move into lower airways
