Gateway’s purpose is to help every person develop
an intimate relationship with God.
Hearing, Believing, Obeying

Hear God
It's innate.

It's learned.

It's matured.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
John 10:27 (NKJV)

Believe God
Believing God is the activation of faith.

And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous
because of his faith. Genesis 15:6 (p. 14)

Obey God
“If you love me, obey my commandments.” John 14:15 (p. 935)

1. Are you putting into practice what Jesus

has taught you today?

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who
builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the
floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse
because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and
doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When
the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will
collapse with a mighty crash.” Matthew 7:24–27 (p. 831)

2. God will not tell you anything that conflicts with His Word.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says.
Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22 (p. 1093)

What do you hear God saying to you today?

Intimacy includes:
• Worship

The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around
and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord
God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Whenever the living crea-
tures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who
lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who
sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast
their crowns before the throne, saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive
glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will
they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:8–11 (NKJV)

• Word

... His name is called The Word of God. Revelation 19:13 (NKJV)

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,
and the Word was God. John 1:1 (p. 918)

• Prayer

Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the
twenty- four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and
golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Revelation 5:8 (NKJV)

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your
name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive
our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the
evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.” Matthew 6:9–13 (NKJV)

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

• Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Trinity: Father, Son, Holy Spirit

There are three persons to God and each one has a different role
in which they function.
… and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a
voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me
great joy.” Luke 3:22 (p. 883)

THE THREE BAPTISMS

The First Baptism: Baptism into the Body of Christ
(Salvation)
Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free.
But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all
share the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (p. 1017)

The Second Baptism: Baptism in Water

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 (p.
856)

The Third Baptism: Baptism in the Holy Spirit

It’s in all four Gospels.

“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But
someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m
not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Matthew 3:11 (p. 824)

1
“I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit!” Mark 1:8 (NKJV )

John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water; but
someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m
not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Luke 3:16 (p. 883)

“I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with
water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is
the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’” John 1:33 (p. 918)

Who is He?
Jesus is the one who baptizes us with the Holy Spirit. He is the
one who immerses us into the empowered life we obtain
through the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father.

He empowers the saints for service and to witness.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you
will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Acts 1:8 (p. 948)

Benefits of the Holy Spirit

“But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the
Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when
he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness,
and of the coming judgment.” John 16:7–8 (p. 937)

What was your perception of the Holy Spirit

before today?

1
Has it changed since we started this session?

What do we believe about the baptism in the

Holy Spirit?
• The baptism in the Holy Spirit, after conversion, releases the
fullness of the Spirit and is evidenced in many ways:
speaking
in tongues, fresh joy, praise, miracles, the power to be a witness,
the power to overcome the desires of the flesh, and many
outward manifestations and gifts as evidenced in Romans 12
and 1 Corinthians 12.

• We do not believe there is a “junior” Holy Spirit. The full gifts,

power, and manifestation of the Holy Spirit is for our children as
well.

How do we receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit?

• By faith based on the truth of Scripture and the desire of
your heart to accept the promise of God for yourself.

• Just as with salvation, all we have to do is ask, believe, and receive.

“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how
much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask
him.” Luke 11:13 (p. 896)
