While flocculation and coagulation are very common early water treatment processes, other
water treatment processes may exist. Chlorine or fluorine gas is introduced to the water with
a positive charge. The positive charge of these compounds cancels out the negative charge.
Common problem charge for dirt and other dissolved particles in the water as this happens,
the particles connect with each other. As a result, the chemicals become bigger particles and
are termed floc. Once the sedimentation is complete, the floc sinks to the bottom of the water
supply owing to its weight. This settling tends to occur the process of sedimentation is
termed. When the floc settles to the bottom of the water supply, the clear water on top will
permeate and seep down into the floc below. Filters of varied compositions (sand, gravel, and
charcoal) and pore diameters, all of which are used to filter out particulates, such as dust,
parasites, germs, viruses, and chemicals, which are dissolved in the liquid. After the water
has been filtered, it may be disinfected with a disinfectant, such as chlorine or chloramine
(see Chlorine for further information). To remove any residual parasites, bacteria, and
viruses, and to safeguard the water from pathogens, a new order has been put in place when it
is piped to residential and commercial buildings. Once that is done, the threatened water may
be sent to residential customers increase in consumption.
