1. Project Title
Smart Street Lights Controlling System

2. Introduction
The street lighting is one of the largest energy expenses for a city. An intelligent street
lighting system can cut municipal street lighting costs as much as 50% - 70%.The
present system is like the lights will be switched on when the sensor in the light detects
any object under the sensor of street light and it will be automatically turned off when
the object is far from the light. Hence we can save a lot of the energy.

3. Objective
The main objectives are as follows:
 To avoid unnecessary waste of light.
 Provide efficient, automatic and smart lighting system.
 Totally based on Renewable energy sources.
 Longer life expectancy.
 Energy Saving

4. Problem Description
Disadvantages of Classical Street Light:
 Street lights remain always on when there is presence of light.
 These street lights need a manual switching operation.
 It also needs man power.
 These street lights are unnecessarily glowing with its full intensity in the
absence of any activities in the street.
 High power consumption and waste of energy.

Advantages of the Proposed System:

 Automatic Switching of Street lights.
 Maintenance Cost Reduction.
 Reduction in CO₂ emission.
 Reduction of light pollution.
 Energy Saving.
5. Methodology
 ARDUNIO IDE: The ARDUNIO Software (IDE) is open source software and
it makes easy to the code and upload it to the board. It runs on the different operating
systems Windows, MAC OS, Linux. The environment is written in Java and before
running the IDE Java software to be installed on the machine this software can be
used with any ARDUNIO board.
 LDR: A Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) or a photo resistor is a device whose
resistivity is a function of the incident electromagnetic radiation. Hence, they are
light sensitive devices. They are also called as photo conductors, photo conductive
cells or simply photocells. They are made up of semiconductor materials having
high resistance. A light dependent resistor works on the principle of photo
conductivity.
 IR Sensor: An infrared sensor is an electronic instrument that is used to sense
certain characteristics of its surroundings by either emitting and/or detecting
infrared radiation. It is also capable of measuring heat of an object and detecting
motion. Infrared waves are not visible to the human eye.

6. Project Scope
This Smart Street light project not only helps in rural areas but also beneficial in
urban areas too. As we are moving towards more advancement. We require more
power so use of renewable resources is useful and advantageous. With this project,
we can even add smart parking of vehicles and it is even useful for driverless cars.
Using this smart project, we can also estimate the speed of the vehicle, recognizing
the number plate, recognizing the accidents that took place on roads etc. With the
advances in technology and good resource planning the cost of the project can be
cut down and also with the use of good equipment the maintenance can also be
reduced in terms of periodic checks. The LEDs have long life, emit cool light,
donor have any toxic material and can be used for fast switching. The project has
scope in various other applications like for providing lighting in industries,
campuses and parking lots of huge shopping malls. This can also be used for
surveillance in corporate campuses and industries. This project “IoT Based Smart
Intelligent Lighting System for Smart City “ is a cost effective , practical, eco-
friendly and the safest way to save energy and this
System the light status information can be accessed from anytime and
anywhere.

7. Feasibility Study
Technical Feasibility:
 Infrastructure: Assess the existing street lighting infrastructure, including the
condition of poles, wiring, and connectivity options. Determine if any upgrades
or modifications are required for seamless integration of smart street lights.
 Communication Network: Evaluate the availability and reliability of
communication networks (e.g., cellular, Wi-Fi, or dedicated networks) for data
transmission between the street lights and the central control system.
 Sensor Technology: Analyze the availability and effectiveness of sensor
technologies required for real-time monitoring and control, such as motion
sensors, ambient light sensors, and occupancy detectors.

Economic Feasibility:

 Cost Analysis: Conduct a comprehensive cost analysis that includes installation

costs, hardware and software expenses, ongoing maintenance and support costs,
and potential energy savings.

Social and Environmental feasibility:

 Safety and Security:
 Evaluate how the system visibility, reduced crime rates, and enhanced
emergency response.
 Environmental Impact:
 Analyze the potential environmental benefits, such as reduced energy
consumption, carbon emissions, and light pollution.
 Maintenance and Support: Evaluate the requirements for ongoing
maintenance, software updates, and technical support.
7. Solution Application Areas
A smart street light controlling system offers a range of solutions and can be
appliedto various areas within urban environments. Here are some key solution and
application areas:
 Energy Efficiency: Smart street light controlling systems optimize energy
consumption by dynamically adjusting lighting levels based on real-time
conditions.
 Cost Savings: By optimizing energy usage and reducing maintenance costs,
smart street light controlling systems provide significant cost savings for
municipalities.
 Environmental Sustainability: Smart street light controlling systems
contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing light pollution and
carbon emissions.

8. Tools/Technology
The tools and programming language that are used in it are mentioned below:
 ARDUNIO
 LDR Sensor
 IR Sensor
 LED
 Circuit Wires
 C++
