Julius Hanau1943 2023

BARTLETT, WILLIAM HENRY, illustrator; b. 26 March 1809 in Kentish Town (London), second son of
William and Ann Bartlett; d. 13 Sept. 1854 off Malta and was buried at sea.... Because he was willing to
subordinate his artistic talent to the needs of his major publisher, George Virtue, and to the contemporary
taste for picturesque topographical illustration, Bartlett failed to achieve significant standing as an artist.
Consequently his art seems inferior when compared with the best work of Cockburn, Heriot…
[William Henry Bartlett’s drawings are housed at the PAC, Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), National Gallery
of Canada (Ottawa), McLaughlin Library, Univ. of Guelph (Guelph, Ont.), and in England at the British
Museum (London), Minet Library (London), Northampton Public Library (Northampton), and Victoria and
Albert Museum (London). Engravings done from his drawings depicting North American scenes were
published in N. P. Willis, American scenery; or land, lake and river illustrations of transatlantic nature, from
drawings by W. H. Bartlett . . . (2v., London, 1840) and in Canadian scenery illustrated, from drawings by
W. H. Bartlett (2v., London, 1842; repr. Toronto, 1967). Bartlett himself wrote and illustrated 12 books,
including The Pilgrim Fathers; or, the founders of New England in the reign of James the
First (London, 1853), as well as the first three sections of the first volume of The
history of the United States of North America; from the discovery of the western
world to the present day (3v., New York, [1855–56]), the remaining sections of
which were completed by Bernard Bolingbroke Woodward.

2.Јulius HANAU
- 25.04.1885- 11.05.1943-
Hanau was born in South Africa in April 1885, and served in British intel ligence in the Balkans between the
two World Wars. He was part of SOE from its foundation, and for the first 18 months of the War organised
resistance movements in the Balkans, particularly Yugoslavia. He was withdrawn from the Balkans to
London prior to the German invasion of Yugoslavia, when it became known that the Germans had identified
him as a British agent to be assassinated.
In London, Hanau was put in charge of SOE's West African mission, where he was responsible for
operation 'Postmaster', the cutting out of ships from Santa Isabel in Fernando Po, and the acquisition of
the ship 'Gascon' and its cargo, both notable coups at a time when SOE was not enjoying much success.
Hanau was instrumental in the establishment of the South African mission and was crucial in planning the
occupation of Madagascar and overcoming elements of Vichy French resistance there. In October 1942
Hanau was sent (after a period of sick leave having contracted malaria in West Africa) to Cairo to plan
actions in the Balkans, but he died of a heart attack in May 1943. The file contains general personnel
material and reports of Hanau's work, both for SOE and prior to its formation. The file also holds one
photograph of Hanau. HS 9/653/2 )

3.JASPER ROOTHAM
Jasper St John Rootham (21 November 1910 - 28 May 1990), was a civil servant, soldier,
central banker, merchant banker, writer and poet.
His paternal grandfather was the singer, organist, and conductor Daniel Wilberforce
Rootham (1837–1922). His father Cyril Rootham was a well-known musician and composer
based at St John's College, Cambridge. His mother Rosamond Margaret Rootham (née
Lucas) had been a notable suffragette, and continued as a campaigner on various social
issues throughout her life.Rootham started his working life as a civil servant. At the start of
the Second World War, Rootham was working in the office of prime minister Neville
Chamberlain, where his fluency in French and German were often called upon during
negotiations with the French and German governments. After Chamberlain's resignation in
May 1940, Rootham worked for Chamberlain's successor as prime minister Winston
Churchill.Anxious to play his part in the war effort, Rootham resigned from the Civil Service
in 1941 in order to join the Special Operations Executive. ...After the war had ended, he
wrote an account of this military venture which was published under the title "Miss-Fire".In
1945, Rootham was posted to Berlin where his fluency in Russian involved him in
negotiations with the Soviet army in the run-up to the Potsdam Conference.Throughout his
life, Rootham found pleasure in writing. He wrote an autobiographical account of his wartime
experiences in Yugoslavia under the title "Miss-Fire". Two novels "Demi-Paradise" and
"Cupid and the Willow Wood" followed, and in his later years Rootham published several
volumes of poetry.Rootham was extremely keen that the music of his father Cyril
Rootham should be performed and heard more widely. From 1960 until his death in 1990,
Jasper Rootham was tireless in promoting performances and recordings of Cyril's works.
Several of these performances were released on LP or CD.
