ACTIVITY 1
Case Study: Automotive Company
You are a newly hired manager of Automotive Company. Since it is part of a manufacturing industry, the
company operates day and night. During your first few weeks with the company, you have noticed a
problem area in the shifting schedule of the employees. You have observed that changing from one shift
to another creates long periods of low or stopped production which became a costly and destructive
routine. Also, you have noticed that the manufacturing process of Automotive Company is longer
compared to your previous car manufacturing company since the placement of the inputs for car
production is relatively far from the actual production units.

Answer the following (2 items x 10 points):

QUESTION 1: What type/s of waste that Lean Approach targets to eliminate is/are present in the case?
The type of waste in this case study is Motion waste, simply because that it is stated in the case
that the production or manufacturing process is taking slower than the other company because of
the inventory placements are somewhat apart. Which later on cause a delay and/ or slower production
which became more costly and destructive. Another issue is underutilization waste, which exists even if
the organization is open 24 hours a day. This problem stems from the employees' fluctuating schedules,
which impedes and consumes the time that they could have given in order to maximize their output rate.

QUESTION 2: What is the most effective Lean approach tool/technique that should be employed to
resolve the problem areas in the Automotive Company?
For me, the better Lean approach that is appropriate to solve this case is Layout. Why? First of
all, it was revealed that imagining a better plant layout might tackle difficulties such as motion waste,
which are rather prevalent in the company's problem region or area. Using Layout technique, we can
make a better space for the employees to maximize their motion into a productive, efficient and useful
work output rate. Then, we can also is the Standardized Work Approach since this will help employees to
follow a specific criteria that would be set by the higher ups in regards to their schedule, preventing
complications when it comes to the time that they could have used.
