REFLECTION

From the talk of Joe Ruhl entitled “Teaching Methods and Inspiring the Students of the Future”,
he talks about his experiences as a teacher and how these experiences make him realize to transform
his teaching techniques where students can enjoy and be motivated to learn. One of the things that he
discusses is to let the students have choices, choices in whatever way they want to learn. From these
choices he also explains the importance of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity
or the 5Cs. According to him authentic learning can be obtained in using these 5cs. He also gives
emphasis on the learning process where before it is teacher centered. To make it more engaging
teachers should shift to student centered where teacher only teach to coach, mentor, and inspire
students. He also believes in what Albert Einstein said “Education is not the learning of facts but the
training of mind to think”. Allowing students to think beyond the box and letting them explore things
through their own knowledge. Making them create things based from what they learn through the
guidance of a teacher. Students should also be given a chance to learn based from their learning style.

The different assessment I saw from the video are through the following; watching videos in
computer tutorials or doing website activities then writing answers on questions from videos they
watch. Another is allowing students do laboratory activities and discover things through this. There is
also educational games design to teach biological concepts. Hands on simulation also was stated where
in student experience what they need to learn. Filling out reflection sheet where students think old
knowledge and connect it to new knowledge and then self-evaluate their efforts. In arts and
entertainment students pick any concept learned in the unit then they develop a project that they want
and present it to the class before the end of the unit. This are many among the non-traditional way of
presenting their output. This type of assessment is effective and fun in teaching and learning. This also
make the teacher Paradox by removing themselves from the center of the class and letting the students
do all the works with the guidance of the teacher.

Two important things he discover during his teaching experience are what he called 2 Loves.
First is teachers love for the subject and passion for subject. Second is the teachers’ genuine love for the
students. This 2 Loves can help teachers inspire students to love learning and the subject as well as to
show love for students by sacrificing themselves without expecting something in return. This love will
result to what he call “Caring” the most effective way to show inspire students to learn. As a teachers
we should allow our students to engage in 5Cs: Choice, collaborate, communication, critical thinking and
creativity.
