The Law Verbs

1.1. The Law / Legal Verbs

1. Commit a crime: to break the law or to do something illegal or immoral.


2. Eyewitness: to be present at an event and see it with one’s own eyes.
3. Investigate: to inquire into or examine systematically a situation or
problem, especially a crime or death, in order to discover the truth.
4. Arrest: to deprive of liberty by taking him / her into custody, esp. under
lawful authority.
5. Identify: to establish the identity of someone or something.
6. Charge: to accuse or impute a fault to a person or group in a court of law.
7. To judge: to hear and decide on in a court of law.
8. Swear: To take an oath in order to add strength or seriousness to a
statement or declaration.
9. Testify: to give proof or evidence under oath in a court.
10. Prove: to provide evidences to the court.
11. Plead guilty: to confess or admit responsibility for a charged offence to
get a lesser punishment.
12. Reach a verdict: to make a common decision among the member of the
jury about a case in a civil or a criminal court.
13. Sentence: to pronounce sentence on the accused person in a court of law
14. Be cleared of all charges: to escape punishment or be found not guilty of
the charged offences.
15. Escort: To accompany others for protection.
16. Imprison: to lock up in a jail to serve out the pronounced sentence.
