1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to describe the Hot and Cold insulation material requirements,
installation guidelines applicable for Gambat South Gas Processing Facility Train-I (GPF -II).
This document covers the material and field application requirements for insulation on the external
surfaces of piping and equipment.

1.2 Scope
This specification should be applicable equipment/piping insulation works whether the insulation
works are carrying out at Vendor shop or Site.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

4.0 SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL

The CONTRACTOR’s equipment/system shall meet the local regulations and if not met any
regulations then local Authority approval shall be taken, keeping the COMPANY informed.

The CONTRACTOR/SUBCONTRACTOR shall be responsible for ensuring that the


equipment/system supplied meets all applicable regulations on health, safety and environment. It
shall be designed to operate safely and satisfactorily at all expected combinations of process,
utilities and site conditions which include those at start-up, operation, shutdown and emergency
cases while retaining the overall system security, reliability and availability.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL PLAN

Contractor shall have a quality control plan (QCP) that includes quality assurance, quality control
and inspection criteria for all aspects of the work. The QCP shall provide verifiable evidence that all
aspects of quality, including, site material acceptance, storage and handling, selection of proper
materials for application and installation, are acceptable. The QCP shall require inspection hold
points as necessary to assure work can be properly inspected before any additional work is
performed that could obscure defective materials or installation.

The QCP shall assure the following material handling practices are observed:

a) All materials are accepted only after receipt in good condition and are packaged in a
manner that protects them from rain prior to undercover site storage.
b) Materials are stored in a manner that prevents contamination by water or chemicals
and physical damage.
c) Materials supplies are in strict accordance with the specifications, except where
otherwise agreed in writing by the PURCHASER.
d) Any material samples required for testing are obtained and processed as required by
the QCP.

The QCP shall include, but not be limited to, checks to verify the following insulation practices are
followed as a minimum:

a) Insulation shall not commence until all required testing is complete and systems are
released for insulation by the Purchaser.
b) The surfaces to be insulated are clean and dry.
c) The surfaces to be insulated are painted if required and released for insulation by the
Purchaser.
d) Heat tracing (if applicable) is installed, inspected and released for insulation by the
Purchaser.
e) Existing installed insulation is protected from damage.
f) Installed insulation is the correct thickness and the correct number of layers.
g) All joints are correctly staggered.
h) Insulation is properly secured.
i) Insulation supports are installed and expansion joints in vertical pipe runs are installed
as required beneath insulation supports. Expansion joints on horizontal piping are
installed and spaced correctly.
j) The extent of insulation is correct.
k) Expansion springs are applied as required.

The QCP shall include checks to verify the following insulation finishing practices are followed:

a) The correct material type, temper, thickness, finish and moisture barrier.
b) Jacketing overlap amount and overlap position is correct. Jacketing lap arrangement
is installed to shed water.

6.0 INSULATION TYPE & APPLICATION


6.1 Insulation Type and Application

Thermal insulation types are listed in Table 6-1 for external surfaces of piping and equipment.
Insulation type is based on the intended application (and type shall be confirmed as per Process
requirement) and is specified on the piping isometric drawings, P&ID, and on the equipment
insulation summary or similar project documents issued by the PURCHASER.

Insulation and finish requirements for piping shall be as specified herein.

Insulation types, thickness, systems and finish for equipment are noted herein and on an equipment
insulation summary or similar document issued by the PURCHASER. Conflicts between the
requirements defined herein and those indicated in the equipment insulation summary shall be
brought to the attention of PURCHASER for resolution prior to application of the insulation system.

The term "equipment" includes vessels (towers, drums, reboilers, and exchangers), machinery
(pumps, compressors, turbines) and tanks (vertical, cylindrical storage tanks).

7.0 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS


7.1 General

All insulation and accessory materials shall be furnished in accordance with the requirements of this
specification, including the specific grade or type.

All insulation materials, sealants, mastics, adhesives and other accessories shall not contain
asbestos.

All materials shall be new and previously used materials shall not be used. Sealants, mastics and
adhesives shall be supplied in factory sealed containers.

Contractor's proposals shall detail the proposed design and define the fabrication methods, including
the extent of field assembly required.

Thermal insulation products shall be qualified for use on austenitic stainless steel in accordance with
ASTM C795. The material manufacturer shall demonstrate that the material that will be furnished for
this project has passed the pre-production corrosion test in accordance with ASTM C692. The
material manufacturer shall also furnish a chemical analysis in accordance with ASTM C871.

Use of materials other than those defined herein requires the prior written approval of the
CONTRACTOR and/or COMPANY.

7.2 Mineral Wool Pipe, Slab and Mattress Insulation

Mineral wool is the considered material for heat conservation (H) and personal protection (PP).

Mineral wool insulation for pipe insulation, mattress and slab shall satisfy the following requirements:

Shot content 20% max. (ASTM C1335)

Mineral wool molded pipe segments shall conform to ASTM C547, Type II, except non-fibrous (shot)
content is limited to 20% max.

Mineral wool wire mesh faced mattress shall conform to BS 3958-3. Mattress shall be furnished
faced with 25 mm stainless steel hex mesh on one side sewn to the mattress with stainless steel
wire.Mineral wool slab shall conform to BS 3958-5.

7.3 Removable Insulation Covers

Removable insulation covers shall be considered in hot oil service insulation ‘only’ and the typical
insulation cover design is showed in Figure 13 in this document. Insulation Applicator/Vendor can
adopt any his own good engineering design in providing the removable insulation covers, but it
should be in two halves with locks/pins wherever applicable. The removable insulation covers should
be provided for flanges and valves in hot oil & Cold insulation services (only).

Flanges & Valves shall not be insulated other than in hot oil & Cold Insulation services.

7.4 Fabrication Adhesives

Adhesive for mineral wool and glass fiber shall be neoprene based contact cement. The following
manufacturer’s products or any other PURCHASER approved equal products are acceptable as
adhesive materials:

7.5 Fasteners and Miscellaneous Insulation Accessories

All metallic accessory materials (springs, bands, seals, screws, etc.) shall be austenitic stainless
steel, Type 316, unless noted otherwise.

All banding shall conform to ASTM A240 and be furnished deburred. Banding seals shall conform to
ASTM A240.

Tie wire shall conform to ASTM A240 and A580/A580M. Tie wire shall be 1.3 mm minimum
diameter.

Tensioning springs, including mounting hardware, shall conform to ASTM A240 and A313/A313M.
The manufacturer’s standard products are acceptable as fasteners and miscellaneous accessory
materials.

Sheet metal screws for fastening sheet to sheet at overlaps shall be No. 8 by 13 mm long, austenitic
stainless steel, Type "A" or "AB" point, with either slotted hex head or slotted pan head.

Sheet metal screws for fastening sheet to structure or sub-girt shall be austenitic stainless steel, 6
mm diameter, with hex drive head and integral EPDM washer.

Tape for fastening insulation shall be 25 mm wide pressure sensitive glass filament reinforced tape.

Weather barrier mastic shall be capable of being applied by trowel, glove or brush. It shall be a non
corrosive, heat resistant, fire retardant plastic suitable for continuous exposure to 82°C minimum.
Mastic shall be furnished in aluminum grey, unless otherwise specified. The following
manufacturer’s products or any other VENDOR recommended equal materials (subject to
CONTRACTOR approval) are acceptable:

7.6 Expanded Metal Guards


Expanded metal shall be Type 316 and conform to ASTM A240, Style 3/4 #18, flattened.

Expanded metal guard support clips shall be fabricated from 38 mm wide, 18 Gage, Type 316
conforming to ASTM A240.

7.7 Aluminized Steel Jacketing

Aluminized steel cladding shall be of coating designation T2-100 (coating weight 1 oz/ft², equivalent
to 300 g/m², and 50 µm thickness on both sides of the sheet) in accordance with ASTM A463.

7.8 Metal Sealant

Metal sealant shall be a room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone, aluminum or grey colour,
suitable for continuous temperatures to 400ºF (204ºC) and intermittent temperatures to 500ºF
(260ºC).

7.9 Material Substitutions

Use of materials other than those defined in this specification requires the prior approval of the
CONTRACTOR and/or COMPANY.

8.0 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS


8.1 General

The installation of high temperature insulation systems shall be in accordance with the requirements
of this standard. Functionally equivalent application practices, which are technically acceptable
alternates to the requirements herein, may only be used when identified in the bidder's proposal and
approved by Purchaser.

The Insulation Contractor/Applicator shall be responsible for dry cleaning of surfaces to be insulated
prior to application of insulation. Insulation shall not be applied over wet surfaces.

The Insulation Contractor/Applicator shall protect coated surfaces scheduled to be insulated. The
Contractor shall report to Purchaser any damages to coatings on surfaces scheduled for insulation.
Insulation shall not be applied until coating repairs have been completed.

Insulation shall not be started prior to satisfactory completion of all required hydrostatic or pneumatic
testing and receipt of written release to commence insulation.

Application temperature for sealants and adhesives shall be within the acceptable temperature
range recommended by the manufacturer and shall be in strict accordance with the manufacturer's
current data sheets.

Insulation adjacent to flanges shall be terminated, where space permits, to allow removal of bolts
without damage to the adjacent insulation. All terminations shall be metal finished and weather tight
regardless of whether the actual flanges are bare, covered with weather shields, or insulated with
either permanent insulation or flexible, removable and reusable insulation covers.

Each insulation layer shall be securely fastened in place in accordance with requirements defined in
Table 8-1. Tape securing insulation shall be overlapped approximately 150 mm. The ends of wire
loops used to secure insulation shall be tightly twisted together, bent over and embedded flush with
the insulation surface. Insulation and jacketing bands shall be machine tightened and sealed in
place while in tension.

The use of broken or otherwise defective insulation shall not be permitted. All insulation shall be
smooth and free from cracks, voids, gaps and depressions greater than 3 mm. All cracks, voids,
gaps and depressions in the insulation greater than 3 mm shall be refitted not filled.

Care shall be exercised in the handling and application of materials so as not to splatter concrete
foundations, paving, structural steel, equipment items, gage glasses, instruments, machined
surfaces, valve stems and packing. Contractor shall be responsible for all overspray or splatter
problems, and liabilities associated with corresponding corrective actions.

Extent of insulation shall be as indicated in Table 8-4.

8.2 Insulation Material Selection

Permanent insulation materials shall be mineral wool for Hot insulation & Personnel Protection &
Polyurethane for Cold Insulation.

8.3 Jacketing Material Selection

Insulation jacketing shall be aluminized steel.

Jacketing thickness shall be as follows:

8.4 Insulation Layering

Unless otherwise specified, piping and equipment insulation shall be applied as a double layer for
greater than 100 mm.

8.5 Insulation System Expansion Joints

Expansion joints are needed to be considered for rigid insulation type materials. For Mineral wool
type of insulation materials, no expansion joints are envisaged, if required at higher operating
temperatures (e.g. Hot oil), the Insulation vendor recommendations should be considered for the
same.

Insulation expansion joints shall be installed in all layers of multiple layer insulation. Expansion
joints shall be staggered 100 mm between layers.

8.6 Pipe Insulation Supports

Vertical piping insulation supports may be furnished shop installed by the piping fabricator.
However, if supports are not installed or additional supports are required, Contractor shall furnish
and install bolt on supports as shown in Detail N in the end of this document sketches. Design of

these supports shall be included in the Contractor's proposal, subject to review and approval by
Purchaser. Vertical piping insulation supports as recommended by Insulation applicator/vendor are
required for all insulation types.

Insulation supports shall be carbon steel for carbon and ferritic alloy steel pipe; 18Cr 8Ni steel for
austenitic alloy steel pipe; and of the same material as the pipe for non ferrous pipe.

The number of support clips per insulation support shall be as follows:

8.7 Piping Insulation

Sectional and segmental insulation shall be applied in one or two layers, as required by insulation
type and operating temperature, to the thickness specified. Single layer systems and the inner layer
of double layer systems shall have joints tightly butted with circumferential joints staggered. Double
layer systems shall be installed so that the outer layer is staggered with respect to the longitudinal
and circumferential joints of the inner layer. Each layer of double layer insulation shall be held in
place separately.

All insulation shall be smooth and free from cracks, voids, gaps and depressions greater than 3 mm.
All cracks, voids, gaps and depressions in the insulation greater than 3 mm shall be refitted and not
filled.

As an alternate to die-formed elbow covers, covers for insulation on piping ells may be fabricated
from jacketing material. The jacketing shall be arranged in gored segments. For this purpose, each
segment shall be fabricated with both sides parallel to the curved edge, one edge crimped for fitting
under and one edge swaged for fitting over. The cladding shall be made up in no less than one
segment for each end and one segment for each cut insulation segment.

8.8 Equipment Insulation

Insulation shall be applied in one or two layers to the thicknesses specified. All joints shall be
carefully fitted. Circumferential joints shall be staggered for horizontal equipment and longitudinal
joints shall be staggered for vertical equipment. In double layer applications, all joints in the outer
layer shall be staggered with respect to inner layer joints.

Equipment with shell diameters of 750 mm or less shall have shell insulation extended to cover the
heads. Each head shall be blocked in with an insulation disc. Nominal disc thickness shall be the
thickness required for the shell.

Unless specified otherwise, all heads exceeding 750 mm diameter (except concealed bottom heads
of skirt supported vessels) shall be insulated with block insulation. Concealed heads shall be
insulated with wire mesh or metal lath faced mineral wool mattress.

Equipment with shell diameters exceeding 750 mm shall have head surfaces insulated with
fabricated insulation segments installed full thickness and fit to follow the curvature of the head.
Each insulation segment shall be retained by bands radiating from a central bridle (floating ring) to
an anchor point on a shell insulation band. Bands shall be spaced on 300 mm or less centers
around the knuckle radius of the head.

Unless otherwise specified, vertical equipment support legs and lugs and saddle supports for
horizontal equipment shall not be insulated.

Insulation on skirt supported vertical vessels shall be extended past the bottom tangent line, down
the exterior surface of the skirt to the bottom insulation support ring. Vessels having skirt inside
diameters exceeding 1200 mm shall have the corresponding inside skirt surface insulated.

Equipment nozzles connected to bare piping shall have the equipment insulation system terminated
on the nozzle and finished with a metallic cover. The insulation shall be applied to the nozzle prior
the application of insulation to the shell of the vessel. In case of double layer application, the
installation of the insulation on the nozzle shall be applied first for each consecutive layer in order to
form a staggered joint at the nozzle/shell juncture.

Sectional mineral wool pipe shall be utilized where specified for insulation of vessel shells with
outside diameters of 750 mm or less. Beveled lag cut from slab shall be utilized where specified for
insulation of vessel shells with outside diameters exceeding 750 mm.

For insulation of vessel shells, rigid pipe sections or rigid curved radius segments shall be utilized up
to the maximum commercially available size. Beveled block insulation for vessel shells shall be
used only when shell diameters exceed the commercially available size of curved radius segments.
Edge beveling of block shall be in accordance with ASTM C450 Adjunct ADJC0450. Bevels may be
applied to either one or both block edges.

Small voids around nozzles and other projections through the insulation on the shell and heads shall
be packed with mineral wool loose fill.

Code or other nameplates shall not be covered by insulation.

8.9 Machinery Insulation

No insulation is required for pumps and other rotating equipment. Compressor insulation shall be as
per Compressor vendor recommendations and no further insulation is recommended as per this
specification.

Unless specified otherwise on individual equipment data sheets or in an equipment insulation


summary, insulation shall not be applied to other machinery items.

8.10 Instrument Insulation

Instrument signal tubing, instrument analyzer tubing and equipment instrument bridles up to
instrument connections shall be insulated if heat traced. Insulation covers for sight glasses with heat
traced bridles shall be furnished as flexible, removable and reusable covers with plastic or tempered
glass windows.

When instrument tubing requires electrical tracing and the tubing is not furnished as pretraced and
insulated bundle, insulation may be installed as follows:

a) Wrap the tube and tracer bundle with two passes of 3 mm thick woven fiberglass tape
using a 50% overlap to provide a total insulation thickness of 13 mm.
b) Secure spiral wrapped tape to the tube/tracer bundle with wire on 150 mm centers.
c) Finish fiberglass tape with weatherproofing mastic applied sufficiently thick to result in
a minimum dry film thickness of 2 mm.

Heat traced bridles shall be insulated in accordance with the insulation requirements specified for
piping.

8.11 Insulation Finish

All insulation terminations on piping and equipment shall be metal finished and weather tight.
Jacketing shall be fitted carefully around vessel and piping attachments which pass through it. Metal
sealant shall be applied to the extent necessary to prevent the entrance of water around
penetrations through the jacketing. Jacketing shall be installed to shed water.

8.12 Requirements for Insulation Type PP

Personnel protection shall be provided if normal temperature of a surface exceeds 65ºC and if the
surface is in an area that is accessible to personnel. Accessible area is defined as an area in which
personnel regularly perform duties, including maintenance, during plant operation. Personnel
protection shall be provided to 2100 mm above grade or platforms and 600 mm horizontally from the
periphery of platforms, walkways, or ladders.

8.13 Additional Requirements for Insulation Type ET

Jacketing for insulation type ET (electrical traced) piping shall be installed with bands only. Screws
and rivets may damage the electrical tracing and are not acceptable fasteners for any jacketing
installed to finish insulation on electrically traced piping.

8.14 Requirements for COLD Insulation

The insulation shall be performed, and to the correct size. All voids must be filled with pieces of the
insulating material and sealed with waterproofing mastic. The insulation shall be held in place with
3/4" filament tape or with 1/2" stainless steel bands (maximum 12" centers).

(a) For services down to and including -30oF. (operating temperature): The insulation
joints shall be completely sealed with waterproofing mastic (Childers CP-30 or equal)
and a vapor barrier of FSK or ASJ jacket will be installed with all joints being sealed
with mastic (not tape).

(b) For services below -30oF. (Operating temperature): The insulation joints shall be
completely sealed with waterproofing mastic (Childers CP-30 or equal). The vapor
barrier shall consist of one of the two following methods:

(1) A coat of mastic, a layer of fab cloth (Childers Chill-Glass or equal) and another coat of mastic.

(2) A layer of Polyguard Insulrap 50 (or equal with Company approval), applied per manufacturer's
recommended procedure. Provide a minimum of 2" overlap width on all joints. Protect from sunlight.

All pipe fittings and flanges shall be completely insulated. All valves shall be insulated up to but not
including the packing gland or nut except for control valves with extended bonnets, these shall be
insulated to the bonnet flange. Insulation is to be sealed.

The insulation shall be covered with a 0.020" stucco embossed aluminum sheet with moisture barrier
facing. The covering for lines with an insulation diameter less than or equal to 6" is to be held in
place with 1/2" wide stainless steel bands on not more than 9" centers. The covering for lines greater
than 6" diameter is to be held in place with 1/2" stainless steel bands on not more than 12" centers.

No screws are allowed in cold insulation. All joints in the covering should be lapped 2" minimum
(longitudinal and circumferential). The longitudinal joints of horizontal pipe and equipment shall be
within 45o of the bottom lapped top over bottom to shed water. All cut-outs are to be sealed with
caulking (Benjamin-Foster 95-44 or equal).

Insulation, barriers, metal, and mastic for 6" and larger handholes and Manways will be shipped
loose for field installation. The insulation and metal shall be pre-cut, assembled, and packed in a
tagged box for shipment.

For services above -50°F use standard T-type steel supports. Where the steel support penetrates
the protective covering shall be sealed with silicone caulking.

Minimum density of Polyurethane shall be 60kg/m3.

Equipment Saddles on horizontal vessels are to be insulated with 1" thick Armaflex (or equal) for a
distance below the insulation that is equal to four (4) times the thickness of the vessel insulation.

8.15 Protection of Materials and Work

Insulation materials subject to damage from dampness and harmful temperature extremes shall be
protected from time of delivery until weather protection is applied. Additionally, the following
conditions shall be observed:

a) Temporary warehouse facilities will be considered adequate protection during working


hours provided the materials are off the ground and are not subjected to damage due
to insufficient drainage and condensation.
b) Decking and covering tarps shall not be allowed except in extreme emergencies and
then only for short periods.
c) Adhesives, sealers and other materials furnished in a liquid state shall be stored
indoors and within temperature ranges required by the material manufacturer.

Insulation removed from storage shall be applied the same day and no unprotected insulation shall
remain on the job site overnight.

Every precaution shall be taken to see that each day's work has permanent weather protection
applied before the conclusion of work. Where this is impractical, temporary weather protection shall
be provided. Adequacy of such protection shall be the responsibility of the Contractor. The
Contractor shall submit proposed protection methods for Purchaser's review.

Insulation which becomes wet due to lack of or inadequate weather protection, either temporary or
permanent, shall be removed and replaced with dry insulation. Wet insulation shall be discarded
and not reused.

layers" applies to 900 mm long insulation segments. Shorter lengths, such as 600 mm long V
grooved mineral wool slab requires two (2) bands or wires per section on all layers.

on horizontal equipment shall have the lapped seam oriented to shed water.

8. Unless noted otherwise for individual equipment items, approximately 100 mm long jacket
banding springs (either double expansion spring units or compression spring assemblies) are
