FB602 - Atlas Davit Testing Guide
FB602 - Atlas Davit Testing Guide
Introduction
This guide outlines the procedure to test an Atlas Davit.
Applying loads to a davit greater than the safe working load (SWL) can be dangerous as there is a possibility
the davit can fail, this could result in an explosion of carbon splinters. Appropriate safety clothing should
be worn e.g. eye protection.
Before testing an Atlas Davit please contact Jeremy Rogers Limited to confirm the test load to be applied.
Equipment Required:
• Atlas Davit
• Socket – must be correct diameter and depth to suit the davit, additionally must be strong enough to
take the applied load
• Correctly calibrated load cell or test weights equal to the required test load
• A solid anchor point the correct distance (reach of the davit) from the socket if a load cell is being used.
• Connecting equipment such as correctly rated shackles
• Appropriate safety gear for personnel conducting the test
Only once all these checks are passed can test proceed, otherwise contact Jeremy Rogers Limited.
The Test
THE TEST LOAD MUST BE APPLIED VERTICALLY ONLY
• Start lifting the load slowly, once the slack has been removed from the rope make a final check that the
load is attached correctly and directly below the sheave. Ensure everything else is still correct and the
cleat is engaged.
• Continue to lift the load slowly until the desired load is achieved / the test weight is airborne.
• Ensuring the load is held on the winch, disengage the cleat and slowly lower the load / weight.
• Report back to Jeremy Rogers Limited the results of the test so the records can be updated.
