Gang Leader D: Chapter 4

1. List one ascribed and one achieved status for each of the following persons. Identify
each status as either ascribed or achieved: [1 pt ea]
JT: JT’s achieved status would be his position as a gang leader and his ascribed status is
being an African American.
Sudhir: Sudhir’s achieved status is him being a college student and his ascribed status is
him being born into a middle-class family.
Autry: Autry’s achieved status is his role as director of the Boy’s and Girl’s club and as a
sort of mediator for the gangs and his ascribed role was being born in the lower class
being stuck in the projects.
Ms. Bailey: Ms. Bailey’s achieved role is her status as the lead tenant at the building with
her ascribed status being a female.

2. Find one example of role strain and explain your example. [2 pts]
I believe that JT being the gang leader is suffering from role strain. He is constantly
overworked and feels as if he can’t get everything done, watch over Sudhir, and worry
about be overthrown/killed by other members.

3. Find one example of role conflict and explain your example. [2 pts]
An example of role conflict would be Ms. Bailey allowing the gang to do illegal activities
in her building, she is supposed to be in charge of reporting crime and keeping the
building safe but her role towards the gang conflicts her role as the tenant.

4. Find one example of status inconsistency and explain your example. [2 pts]
JT suffers from status inconsistency as he is a well-educated man that had an
opportunity with a career but went to be a gang leader, while most of them never went
to college.

5. Do the residents of Robert Taylor value education? How do you know? [2 pts]
The residents of Robert Taylor do not value education because less than 40% of them
even graduated high school let alone ever getting to college.

6. Find two examples of manifest and latent functions. Identify and explain the manifest
and latent function for each example. (Remember that manifest and latent are always
paired and each pair is about one person, thing, or event.) You cannot use a voter
registration example for this question. [4 pts]
The manifest function is JT allowing Sudhir to be the gang leader in order to let him see
how hard it is, while the latent function would be that JT is able to justify what he does
to Sudhir. Another manifest function is that JT allows his guys to sell drugs in order to
make money for the gang, the latent function is that they try to stretch the product to
make money for themselves.

7. What are two things that you think could make the biggest positive differences for a
child growing up in Robert Taylor? [2 pts]
I believe that if they had a safer are to play and be like kids it would help them to
develop more and not turn to drug dealing, and also adding things like the boy’s and
girl’s club available for everyone to promote more education.
