Symptom: Tfe displayof instantaneousfuel


consumption on the meterwill not
go higher
than17.0mpg.
Cause: The meterwas not programmed
to displaymorethan 17
correctly
mpg instantaneous fuel consump-
tion.
Remedy: The meterprogramming has been
correctedon all unitsproducedafter
theatfectedrangeto displaya maxi-
mumof 99 mpginstantaneous fuel
consumption. Units within
theatfect-
ed rangeshouldhavetheir meter
assemblyreplacedwith the meter
kit assembly(see Partslnformation
section,page10).

newodometerwill havezero miles,so it will be necessaryto use stickersto makenotationin the
owner'smanualand on the motorcyclerecordingthe actualmileageon the motorcyclewhen the
odometerwas replaced.Beforemodifyingan unfamiliarunit,checkto see if the instantaneous
fuelconsumption readingwill go above17 mpg (youcan alsocheckYDSor, on someunits,look
for a stickerinsidethe accessorystoragebox).
IMPORTANT:There are stickersincludedwith the replacementmeter.These must be used
on unitswith mileageto complywith federalmotorvehiclerequirements. Affix one insidethe
accessorystoragebox lid on the motorcycleand the otherinsidethe backcoverof the Owner's
Manual.You must also followany additionalsteps requiredby your state'sDMV regulations,if
applicable,
whenreplacingthe odometer. A set bf stickersis alsoincludedwiththis bulletin.

PROCEDURES
Please read the entire followingprocedurebefore
starting:
1. Removethe inner cowl panelsby performing
the following:
. Removethe 6 screwsfrom the top of the inside
panel(silvercoloredscrewsat center,see adja-
centphoto).
Tools:4mm
hexwrench
Removethe 3 plasticrivetsfromthe bottomof
theinsidepanel(2 leftside,onerightside).
NOTE:Pushthecenterof therivetto releasethe
rivet.
Tools: smallpunch
Removethe 1 screwinsidethe accessory
stor-
agebox(seeadjacentphoto).
Tools:
#3 Phillips
screwdriver
Removethe 2 plasticrivetsbelowthe center
vent.
Tools:smallpunch
Removethe rightrearand left rearinnerpan-
els.

Removethe right and left headlightadjuster


screws,then the adjusterknobsand retaining
nuts.
Tools:

Removethe rightfrontthen left front inner pan-

IMPORTANT:Be sure to note the routing of the


headlightadjustmentcablesduringdisassembly. lf
they are routedincorrectlyduringdisassembly,the
front cowl must be removedto correctlyroutethese
cables.

2. Remove the mirrorsby performing


thefollowing:
. Removethe 4 nutsretainingthe mirrors.(The
rubberwasherat themirrorbaseis notsymmet-
ricalandmustbeinstalled correctly
to matchthe
mirrorbaseduringassembly.)

3. Removethe windshieldby performingthe follow-
ing:
Removethe 2 screws retainingthe windshield
molding,thenthe molding(slidethe moldingup
alongthe shieldthenoff).

Removethe 7 screwsretainingthe windshield,


thenthe windshield.

4. Remove mountbyperforming
thewindshield the
following:
Removethe 2 screwsand2 boltsretaining
the
windshield
outermount,thentheoutermount.

the innerwind-
shieldmount,thentheinnermount.

5 . Remove
the sideventby performing
the follow-
ing:
Remove thequickfasteners,openthesidevent,
flexthehingeopenslightly,
thenremovetheside
vent.

Removethe left lowercowl panelby performing


the following:
Removethe 2 screws on the left of the lower
centercowlpanel.

Remove the2 screwsonthebottomof thelower


leftcowlpanel.

Removethe 4 plasticrivets from inside of the
lowerleft and rightcowl panel.
Tools:smallpunch

Removethe 3 screwsfrom the top of the lower


leftand rightcowlpanel.

Removethe 3 screwsfrom the outsideof the


lowerleft cowl panel.
Tools:4mmhexwrench

Disconnectthe left turn signal wire connector,


then removethe lowerleftcowlpanel.

7. Removethe wiringfrom the storagebox by per-
formingthe following:
Openthe wire clampon the side of the storage
box and removethe wires.

Clipthe zip tie attachingthe wire harnessto the


storagebox.
Disconnectthe black connectorfor the acces-
sory poweroutlet.
Disconnectthe connectorat the storaoe box
solenoid.

8 . Removethe frontcowl by performingthe follow-


ing:
Removethe 4 screwsretainingthe frontcowlto
the frontcowlbracket.
Turn the main switchon and open the storage
box lid.
Disconnect the batterynegativeterminal.

Apply protectivetape aroundthe insideedge of


the frontcowland storagebox lid.
Tools:maskingtape

Pushthe windshield armsfullydownintothe
slotsin thefrontcowl.
Pullthefrontcowloutandup (onthe rightside)
to disconnect
withtherightlowercowl.

Flexthesidesof theuppercowloutwardandlift
the frontcowlup andoverthe windshield
lifting
mechanism.

Disconnectthe rightandleftheadlight
couplers
at theheadlights
andremovethefrontcowl.

9. Removethe meterassembly
by performing
the
following:
Removethe3 screwsretaining
the meterto the
frontcowlbracket.
Tools:Long#2 Phillipsscrewdriver

. Disconnect thewireconnector
at themeterand
removethe meter.
10.lnstallthe
newmeter.
NOTE:Newandoldmeterscanbe identified by
the labelon thebackof the meterhousing(see
loweradjacentillustration).
11.Reassemble
in reverseorderof the removalse-
quence.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to correctlyroute the
headlight adjustmentcableswheninstalling the
frontcowl.lf the cablesare routedincorrectly
duringreassembly, the frontcowl mustbe re-
movedagainto correctlyroutethem(seephoto
in step 1, page2 for the correctroutingof the
cables).
12.Usinga screwdriver, bendoverthe pinsinside
the connectoron the backof theold meterso it
cannotbe reusedaccidently. Tagand holdthe
meterfor g0 days.
