EXPLORING

ENDANGERED
SPECIES
Saving Our Wildlife

DEFINITION OF
ENDANGERED SPECIES
An endangered species refers to an
animal or plant species that faces a high
risk of extinction in the near future,
either globally or within a specific
political jurisdiction. Such species are
vulnerable to various threats such as
habitat destruction, poaching, and
invasion by non-native species.

CAUSES OF
ENDANGERMENT
The major reason for the increased
rates of extinction is habitat loss. Other
contributing factors include alterations
to habitats, exploitation of wildlife for
commercial gain, the introduction of
harmful non-native species, pollution,
and the spread of diseases.

IMPACT ON
ECOSYSTEMS
When a species is at risk of extinction,
it indicates that the ecosystem is
deteriorating. The disappearance of one
species can lead to the loss of other
species in that same ecosystem.

WAYS TO HELP
According to scientists, the most
effective approach to safeguard
endangered species is to preserve their
natural habitats. These creatures
require specific locations to procure
food, seek shelter and raise their
offspring. Activities such as logging, oil
and gas drilling, over-grazing and
development lead to the destruction of
these habitats.
