1. What are the common features of all these three cases?

Above all three cases have a common feature which is about social entrepreneurs and their social
enterprises. Social entrepreneurs are those who work on a social issue/ societal problems, make a
business out of them, and their sole motive is to generate some positive social impact for the betterment
of society, community, nation and world. Social entrepreneurs think out of box, they work for
betterment of all. The common features are:

i) Orientation for social benefit/ social enterprises


ii) Social well-being driven profit motive
iii) Business idea generated from social issue

2. Why you think these enterprises are social?

A social enterprise is a business with specific social objectives. Social enterprises seek to maximize
profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. Be it Elvis & Kresse which made
belts out of used/inactivated fire hose which were environmental pollutants or Dr. Pun’s Wireless
Networking project which aimed to provide internet facilities to remote areas of Nepal they worked for
bringing about a positive change in the society.

3. What kind of entrepreneurial features do these people have?

The personalities of the cases all borne a common trait, the ‘entrepreneurial trait’. They all shared the
entrepreneurial features:

i) Creativeness: Starting a business with waste or making a dream of providing wireless


technologies to hinterland sound ridiculous to a common man. But the personalities in the
cases saw opportunities out litter. Social entrepreneurs see problems as an opportunity to
get creative
ii) Risk taking: Social ventures are not easy to sustain like other business. There are
numerous difficulties in sectors like finance, working manpower, market for sales,
customer satisfaction. There’s always a risk of enterprise sustainability, growth. Despite
the hurdle they continually worked and made their enterprise well recognized.
iii) Dedication: Starting a venture with a social motive is not as easy as it seems. They all
worked effortlessly and selflessly continuously despite the hindrances, failure that came
their way and made their social enterprise sustain.
iv) Networking: Networking is one of the features that these social entrepreneurs possess.
They networked or made a collaboration with team with whom they could take advice,
exchange ideas and generate help for them to make their venture a success.
