The second most common verb in French is the verb avoir, which translates as ‘to have’ in English. Let’s go through the
conjugation of avoir in the present tense.
je J'ai
tu Tu as
il/elle/on Il/Elle a
Note
Note that the subject pronoun ‘je’ changes to ‘j’’ with the verb avoir. This is because avoir begins with a vowel, and the
same contraction will take place for all verbs that begin with a vowel.

When learning the verb aller (to go), we must also learn what follows naturally. We go to a place, which is expressed using the
conjugation of the verb aller in the present and a form of the preposition à (to):
Il y a
Il y a is an interesting expression that means both there is and there are; the same expression is used for both singular and
plural.

To use this expression in the negative, we use the same negative expression that we learned before but add the preposition
de/d’.
‘De’ is used in front of words that begins with consonants, and ‘d’’ is used when the word begins with a vowel.
Example:
Il n’y a pas de stylo sur la table. Il n’y a pas d’ordinateur dur la table.
There is no pen on the table. There is no computer on the table.
