popular Ornate Illustrations tutorial. That step--step tutorial focused on using vertical
smmetr to create traditional Indonesian masks, ut there is now an even more powerful
tool in ketchook called Radial mmetr, which we’re covering in this tutorial. This tool is
asolutel perfect for making elaorate mandalas, and the eaut of it is that ou can set the
tool to partition up to sixteen sectors. Just draw one simple design and our work will e
multiplied — perfectl smmetrical down to the pixel. esides saving ou time, it can let ou
get incredil detailed with our mandalas. The end results ma make others sa, “How
could ou have possil done that?” It’s a lot easier than ou might think.

When ou’re designing a mandala for a product, such as the t-shirts this mandala will end up

rough sketches, ut in truth the are not that hard to make. When using Radial mmetr,
ou’re onl adding the details once and letting the tool cop it across the mandala. You get a
much more detailed sketch so much quicker, so it pas to make multiple rough drafts and
experiment with drawing and shading some of the details. If ou like to partition our
mandala designs across man diameters, ou can perfect each area with these kinds of
rough sketches efore tackling one ig, all-encompassing mandala.

Crank up the Radial mmetr tool to 16 sectors and work out some of our details efore committing.

Pro Tip: Draw on a Gra ackground
After choosing the est details of our mandala sketches for our  nal product and drawing
it out, start a new laer — or multiple laers — for the inking. Raka suggests that ou not
simpl work on a white ackground. Tint our ackground laer gra as he has done in this
design. He’s going to e putting these mandalas on t-shirts, so this design might e printed
on di erent colors of faric.  drawing on a gra ackground, ou can get an idea of what
works and doesn’t work so well on white and lack ackgrounds. Of course, ou could also
swap out multiple ackground colors if ou want to see exactl what our design will look
like on a speci c color of ackground, ut gra is proal our est et.

Take advantage of all those laers ou have at our disposal.

You can see from Raka’s laer stack that he has changed and edited his original sketch as he
inked the  nal image. Raka used a “Tattoo Inker” rush from the default asics rush set
that’s in the latest iO version of ketchook, ut of course ou should customize a rush so
that it works for our stle of drawing. Raka has the Radial mmetr tool set to 16 segments,
which as ou can see mirrors at ever peak of the outer ring of lotus leaves.

Flat Color, hading, and Laer tles
Raka uses two laers for color: a ase laer of  at colors and a second laer of shading. He
keeps his inking laer (from the last step) on top of it all. You can shade  drawing shadows
or  using crosshatching, whichever ou think looks est.

Your mandala can e  at, ut adding shading will give it a more three-dimensional look — almost like a medallion.

Putting our  at ase colors and our shading on separate laers is a great work ow
ecause ou can easil change the opacit, saturation, or values of our shading all at once.
If ou’re someone who likes to use Laer tles in apps like Photoshop (e.g., Multipl,
Overla, Glow, etc.), ou undoutedl alread know how powerful Laer tles can e. All
those Laer tles are in ketchook, and putting shading on a separate laer means ou
can tweak that laer more easil in one fell swoop. Of course, it can also help ou if ou don’t
end up loving all of our color choices. Just create a new laer and tr something new.

The Final Illustration: Transparent If You Need It
The  nal image is read with the working ackground color removed so it is transparent and
can e easil printed. Mandalas can e hpnotic, and this one is no exception. It’s eautiful.

Print it. hip It. njo it.
Raka’s mandala design is read to print on t-shirts. If ou’re planning on printing on paper or
faric or anthing else, e sure to set our canvas or image size in ketchook for large,
high res output. For something elaorate and detailed like this, it’s est to start our image at
300dpi and at least as large as an 11×17 sheet of paper.
