LAB TASK#03

RESISTANCE LAB

Hammad JAVED
NA-022
1.TASK:

a) Calculate the water plane areas till waterline at draught 8’ for given offset data of Ship in Lab Task
01 using MS Excel
b) Calculate the Displaced Volume of Ship and Longitudinal Centre of Buoyancy for above calculated
water plane area applying Simpson’s Rule in MS Excel
c) Export the same hydrostatic results for developed hull form in Maxsurf and compare with the
Excel results
d) Submit the Lab task in Word file and hard copy containing the procedure, Hydrostatic calculation
using MS Excel and MAXSURF and the results comparison in tabular form

2. PROCEDURE:
2.1 Rhino:
i. Open the hull file in rhino.
ii. Draw a line at 0 points in the X direction. Move this line in the Z direction at draught 10 ft.
iii. Open the top view. Use the PROJECT command to project this waterline. And then use the
ISOLATE command to leave with the other only waterline.
iv. Measure the distance from bow to stern from ANALYZE section (104.27 ft). from ARRAY command
divide hull into 8 equal sections [station spacing = 13.066]
v. Intersect all points with Waterline by using INTERSECT command.
vi. Use the SELPT command to select all points. Go in File sections > Export Selected> Points (*txt*)
{Save as type} > Save.
vii. Import these points in an excel sheet; calculate AWP by using Simpson’s rule.
2
AWP = * h * (Sum of Product)
3

The calculated AWP is 1834.763667. In rhino software, it is 1831.965626.

(b) For calculating volume:

Draw the waterline of your own choice. By TRIM command trim the hull above the waterline.
In the front view, draw a line in the Z direction at the bow.
In the perspective view use the ARRAY command to make stations.

Use the ISOLATE command to be left with only desired lines (Stations).
Then create points at the intersections, (Points must be created in a specific order, either top to bottom or
bottom to top as Rhino exports points coordinates list in order of creation). Also make sure to create
points on the positive side of the Y-Axis to avoid the negative sign with the coordinate that could conflict in
excel. Do this for each section.

Use the “SelPts” Command to select all the points and then use the “Export” Command, In the dialogue
box select “Points” in the “Save as Type” drop-down list. And save it. This will give a notepad file with the
list of coordinates of each point which can now be used in an excel table to automate the calculations.

2.2 MS Excel:
1. Make Columns for the x, y,z coordinates of each section. Also include the forwardmost point as the
section to keep it in consideration for the Simpsons multiplier calculation.
2. Make columns for the Simpson Multiplier, Product, Sum, and Area Respectively
3. For Product use the “*” function to multiply the y-coordinate cell with the multiplier cell in front
of it and drag down the cell data to obtain the formulae in each cell.
4. For Sum, use the “SUM” function and select the respective cells. Select the Cell and Copy/Paste it
for each section. Excel will automatically update the Cell selection in the formula based on where it
is pasted.
5. For Area, use the formula “=(2/3)*(D3-D4)*G5

6. Copy all the Areas in a new column, and multiply them with the Simpson Multiplier.
7. For Volume use the formula= 1/3*(13.066*(Q50))
8. For LCB calculation create a column for Distances from bow, and multiply the distances with the
respective Area products (K3->K9)
9. Use the formula = (1/3)*(1/Q51)*D67*13.066 for LCB.
2.3 Maxsurf Stability:
1. In MAXSURF Stability, open the design that was made in MAXSURF Modeler. And use the highest
settings for section calculations.

2. Select Upright Hydrostatics option for analysis (This is already set by default).
3. From the “Data” drop down list, go to “Units” and set them to Decimal Feet and Pounds
respectively. These are the ones we will be using for our results.
4. From the “Analysis” drop down list, go to “Draft” and set it to 10 ft.
5. Click the “Start Analysis” button.
6. Maxsurf will create a word file with the outputs, and they can also be viewed in the results
window. Currently we need the following:
a. Displacement = 371.4
b. LCB from zero pt (+ve fwd) = 58.584 ft

Draft Amidships 10.000

ft
Displacement t 371.4
Heel deg 0.0
Draft at FP ft 10.000
Draft at AP ft 10.000
Draft at LCF ft 10.000
Waterpl. Area ft^2 1918.995
Prismatic coeff. (Cp) 0.716
Block coeff. (Cb) 0.554
Max Sect. area coeff. (Cm) 0.819
Waterpl. area coeff. (Cwp) 0.823
LCB from zero pt. (+ve fwd) ft 6.902
LCF from zero pt. (+ve fwd) ft 6.594
7.Calculate Volume of displacement= 12241.04
3. Results Comparison
