DIPLOMACY

BILATERAL MODE OF DIPLOMACY

Introduction
Diplomacy is an aspect that has an important role for international relations actors in
fulfilling their national interests. In relation to international politics, diplomacy prioritizes the
interests of a country in relation to other countries. Diplomacy has a variety of ways to
achieve agreement in a goal. The methods carried out in diplomacy can be carried out by two
or more countries, and can even be done by having a specific scope. In this case, we discuss
conventional diplomacy, unconventional diplomacy and the diplomatic protocol
Conventional
Conventional bilateral diplomacy is the diplomatic relation between the two states is
conducted through accredited mission. In 1961 the UN Conference on Diplomatic Intercourse
and Immunities adopted the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to replace the 19th-
century rules of Vienna
Unvonventional
Conventional diplomacy or the opposite of conventional diplomacy is diplomatic
relations between two countries carried out through missions that are not accredited.
Unconventional diplomacy shows that international actors can communicate differently from
conventional rules and methods, such as using other means to negotiate and reach a mutual
agreement.
Three unconventional forms: secret meetings, the use of special envoys and funeral
diplomacy will be introduced and analyzed in such a way that allows us to conclude how
useful and effective they are, and what their relative importance is in the new era.1

Diplomatic Protocol
The diplomacy protocol is a rule that describes how a diplomatic activity must be
carried out and protocol diplomacy is part of diplomatic practice. Which involves etiquette.
Because it not only includes the ceremonial rules that are followed officially but also
provides rules of courtesy that must be respected. Diplomatic protocols are also used as
reciprocal communication tools to minimize the possibility of diplomatic errors. The protocol
determines appropriate behavior and is generally accepted in state matters and diplomacy,

such as showing proper respect to the head of state, ranking diplomats in chronological order
of their accreditation in court, and so on.
Conclusion
We can concluded that diplomacy carried out by each country has a certain pattern in
accordance with the objectives of diplomacy itself. The pattern of bilateral diplomacy is the
practice of diplomacy carried out by two countries in a closed or confidential manner. This is
because diplomacy is carried out only on the national interests of the two countries, making it
less likely for other countries to take an active role in this diplomacy.
In this case, bilateral diplomacy is generally carried out to solve problems between
two countries and not involve other parties because it is considered not too important or if
other parties are involved, it will further complicate diplomacy. In bilateral diplomacy, the
less people are, the better and compromise is more easily achieved. Two parties negotiating
with each other can better understand the wishes of the other party.
