HERBERT BUTTERFIELD is Regius Professor of Modern
History at Cambridge University and Master of Peterhouse,
where he formerly was a student. He received an honorary
LL.D. Aberdeen in 1952 and Hon. D.Litts. from Dublin
at
University (1954), Hong Kong (1961), Sheffield
(1962), Hull
(1963), Belfast (1955), and Harvard and Columbia (1956).
From 1938-1952 he was Editor of the Cambridge Historical
Journal and from 1955-1958 he was President of the His-
torical Association.He is a Member of the Executive Board
of the International Association of Universities and was
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1959 to
1961. His many books The Whig Interpretation of

The following study deals with *the whig
interpretation of history' in what I conceive
to be the accepted meaning of the phrase. At
least it covers all that is ordinarily understood
by the words, though possibly it gives them
also an extended sense. What is discussed is

Interpretation of History
A classic essay on the distortions of history
that occur when historians impose a rigid
point of view on the study of the past
of the past. The true historian studies the past for its own
sake. He sees "in each generation a clash of wills out of which
there emerges something that probably no man ever willed,"
and his creative work is to make the past inteUigible to the
present by insight and sympathy with the conditions of the past.
