Article on Demonstrations and Social Protests

Summary: There are several types of demonstrations, public demonstrations, such as

marches, picket lines, street protests, strikes, die-in, chants, and can reach high levels if
it is for a truly important cause, but having several other types of demonstrations that
can be made.

Introduction: manifestations and protests do not consist only of taking to the streets in
crowds, there are those who use art and culture to manifest and protest, showing that the
strength that literature and music have in different times, for example, can be a way
effective resistance in authoritarian regimes, where freedom of expression is limited, or
it can generate important discussions and raise public awareness of relevant issues,
effective against social injustices.

Development: There are several ways to hold demonstrations and protests, art for
example has always been present as a form of expression and communication. Over the
years, it has become increasingly complex and sophisticated, but it has never lost its
essence: the ability to convey ideas. One of the most important uses of art is as a form
of social protest and denouncement .Since the beginning of the 20th century, several
artistic movements have emerged with the aim of questioning the norms established by
society and drawing attention to important issues, such as inequality, racism, sexism,
homophobia and other types of oppression. Artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera,
Keith Haring, Banksy, Ai Weiwei and many others used their works to make scathing
critiques of the society in which they lived. His works are true political demonstrations
that seek to raise awareness people about the injustices that occur around them Art can
also be a form of resistance against authoritarian and oppressive regimes. In countries
where freedom of expression is limited or non-existent, art can be one of the few forms
of protest available to citizens. With the advent of social media, activist art gained a
new dimension. It is now possible to disseminate a work to millions of people in a
matter of seconds. This makes it easier to mobilize people around a cause and create a
sense of unity around the fight against oppression.
Art as protest can generate important discussions and raise public awareness of
relevant issues. There are many ways to hold demonstrations and protests. It is true that
large protests can help put an issue on the political agenda and strengthen public debate.
But even in democracies, large crowds are often not enough to influence government.
Huge anti-war demonstrations in the UK and the US in February 2003 did not stop the
two countries from invading Iraq the following month. The 2011 Occupy Wall Street
movement, which spread to around 900 cities around the world, did not achieve any
specific objective.. it can also be done in the literary tangent, I use as an example the
book Animal Farm by George Orwell, a satire on Soviet communism, in an attempt to
build a utopian society, focused especially on the plot about the seduction and
corruption that power provides ; referring to communism over the Stalinist dictatorship.
In the history of mankind, protests, since ancient Greece, had relevance, had
achievements and marked their time, using as an example the Arab Spring and the Fall
of the Berlin Wall, referring to the Arab spring that became known as the first
revolution promoted by social networks. a series of popular protests in countries in the
Middle East and North Africa Due to dissatisfaction with corruption in governments,
lack of opportunities and unemployment millions took to the streets calling for change,
in acts that had on the internet a powerful tool against repression. The fall of the Berlin
Wall was marked by protests that culminated, two years later, in the dissolution of the
Soviet Union. This context of unrest culminated in a demonstration scheduled and
authorized by the government for August 4 at Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The act
eventually laid bare the general dissatisfaction with communism, and grew in the
following days, reaching half a million people. Until the rulers had no alternative but
the official announcement, on November 9, of the opening of the border with West
Germany, ending the practical function of the Berlin Wall. The population began right
there to put down the barrier and celebrate with their fellow citizens, initiating German
reunification..
The demonstrations and protests have been having more and more relevance
awakening of the population to the present reality. Demonstration of the popular foça
and articulation of the event through social networks. unity of minorities for the social
and egalitarian cause. But it is necessary to be careful with the actions of vandals and
rioters infiltrated in the demonstration to avoid the damage caused by these people.
