Make a list of things you think people do to stand out at their company. Then scan the article to
see if any of the strategies match the things you come up with.
After working six years at a company, Bob Congers lost his job. On the contrary, he was a good
worker, but his company was cutting its workforce. Workforce cutbacks are common in today’s
company. So how can you distinguish yourself and avoid losing your job? Career experts have
developed these strategies for holding on to a job.
Being a good worker is sometimes less important than making sure that people know you’re a
good worker. Volunteer for new responsibilities, push your ideas, and make sure everyone knows
you. Learn everything that could help you do your job better.
If the company buys computers. Learn how to use them. If learning more about marketing could
help you, take a short course. Make sure you know about changes and new directions in the
company. If you find out that sales is becoming the most important department, try making a
move to sales.
People who find thing to complain about are a lot less popular than people who find things to
praise. Having a good attitude is important.
Having good ideas isn’t always enough. You need to be able to communicate them. Find ways to
improve your speaking and writing skills.
You can make a positive impact on your boss by arriving early and working late. And you should
always dress in a business like way, even if others dress casually.
In the end, it all comes down to one basic strategy: Make yourself so valuable that the company
won’t want to lose you.

And that’s precisely the problem. They come up so frequently and, whether serious or not, are
flagged with such regularity by the pharmacists’ clinical decision-support software that they often
lead to “alert fatigue.” As academic researchers at the University of Arizona’s College of
Pharmacy describe it: “Too many intrusive alerts are mentally draining and time-consuming, and
result in providers ignoring both relevant and irrelevant warnings.”
Pharmacists and full disclosure, I’ve been good friends with a bunch for years have been using such
computerized drug-interaction alert systems since the 1970s. (They may well be the earliest soldiers
in the digital health revolution.) Their experience with alert fatigue particularly when the warnings
are non-specific or inconclusive (or inaccurate) is an important consideration for anyone designing
new digital health systems and applications today.
Problem Two is that pharmacists are too often inheriting the inappropriate choices from physicians,
who are actually prescribing the drugs. Physicians have the responsibility of asking patients what
other medications they might be taking and, yes, like pharmacists, they have applications
(called Computerized Provider Order Entry) that warn of potentially dangerous interactions. And yup,
they override them, too. With abandon, it seems. In 17 different studies that examined the issue,
according to one review, the lowest estimate had physicians overriding their drug safety alerts in
49% of cases. (The highest estimate was 96%.)
But Problem Three is the biggest and thorniest of all: Our health system is squeezing pharmacists
hard and, if we continue in the same vein, we might possibly squeeze them out of their role as
“frontline” care givers altogether. Gross margins and reimbursement rates for pharmacists have
been shrinking for years while the cost and regulatory burden of doing business have risen sharply.
It’s a particularly hard slog for independent pharmacies (more than 80% of which are in communities
of 50,000 people or less), which often try to make ends meet (and compete with the big chains) by
filling more prescriptions at a faster pace with fewer pharmacists. That, of course, is when mistakes
happen.
And my guess is, they’ll happen all the more when every one of us is getting our meds from mail
order.

What is Health?
ealth is a term that refers to a combination of the absence of illness, the ability to cope with everyday
activities, physical fitness, and high quality of life. In any organism, health can be said to be a "state of
balance", or analogous to homeostasis, and it also implies good prospects for continued survival. Wellness is
a term sometimes used to describe the psychological state of being healthy, but is most often used in the
field of alternative medicine to describe one's state of being.
The most widely accepted definition is that of the World Health Organization (WHO). It states that
"health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease
or infirmity" (WHO, 1946). In more recent years, this statement has been modified to include the ability to
lead a "socially and economically productive life." The WHO definition is not without criticism, as some
argue that health cannot be defined as a state at all, but must be seen as a process of continuous
adjustment to the changing demands of living and of the changing meanings we give to life. The WHO
definition is therefore considered by many as an idealistic goal rather than a realistic proposition.
Health is maintained through the science of medicine, but can also be improved by individual
effort. Physical fitness, weight loss, healthy eating, stress management training and stopping smoking and
other substance abuse are examples of steps to improve one's health. Workplace programs are recognized
by an increasingly large number of companies for their value in improving health and well-being of their
employees, and increasing morale, loyalty and productivity at work. A company may provide a gym with
exercise equipment, start smoking cessation programs, provide nutrition, weight or stress management
training. Other programs may include health risk assessments and health screenings.
