The only class rule you will ever need
Thank you for purchasing this product! I hope that you will find this resource helpful in your classroom.
I have spent about a decade teaching and have tried all kinds of classroom rules. However, I decided I
needed simplicity. In our classroom, we have one rule: Respect. Much like the Whole Brain Rule: Make Smart
Choices, it is an all-encompassing rule. It covers everything! And who can’t remember one rule!?!
Included you will find four different variations of the classroom display: White or Black, with
pinks/teal/purple/gray colors and White or Black, with rainbow colors. For each classroom display, you will
find a printable with a kid-friendly definition of the word ‘respect’. You will also find four banners:
Respect Others, Respect Learning, Respect Property, and Respect Yourself. I have also included details of
what each of those types of respect involves. These are printed on separate posters or summed up on
one poster. You will also find the word Respect in large letters, which I print on colored card stock and cut
out to hang in my class.
Also included is an activity to get kiddos thinking in terms of the four main types of respect. I included
several options for this activity, including whole group, small group, partner, or independent work.
Directions for each option is included, along with two sets of scenario cards and a recording sheet.
Printing Tip:
For my own classroom, I printed the respect posters (definition, banners, and poster with descriptions) at Office Depot™ because they print
soooo nicely there and the black posters do take a lot of black ink. I printed the definition poster and four banners on cardstock, but the
poster with the 4 detailed descriptions as a poster size from there. I laminated all, so they have lasted for years!
R-E-s-p-e-c-t:
The only class rule you will ever need
Suggestion for Introduction:

After you have “WOW”-ed your kiddos with the fact that you only have one classroom rule, introduce the term
‘respect’. Have kids work in small groups to come up with their own definition of respect, write it on a post-it note, and
lead the kids in a classroom discussion. Have a student read the definition from a dictionary (or dictionary.com) aloud
for the class. Get the kids to help write one class definition that is pretty much the same as the one in this resource.
After you have defined respect, introduce the four ways we are going to show respect at school: Respect for
Others, Learning, Property, and Yourself. Refer back to the definition and ask kids how we can treat others at school to
show them that they are important, serious, and valuable. Have kids either shout out answers while you record, work
with a buddy to record, or jot them on a post-it note. Lead the class in a discussion, sharing their ideas. Continue this
work with the other three (learning, property, and yourself). Create an anchor chart with students’ suggestions (which
will probably look a lot like the one in this resource).
The next day, display the poster from this pack and complete an activity to really dig into what respect will look like
and sound like in your class.

R-E-s-p-e-c-t Activities
The following pages contain an activity that you can use in a variety of ways in your classroom.
Included are two sets of 18 cards, which involve scenarios of students either showing respect or
disrespect. Students will decide which area(s) of respect are being shown or not shown in the scenarios
(respecting others, learning, property, or yourself). There is not an answer key included because most
of the scenarios could be in multiple categories. The point is for students to think about respect and how
certain situations show respect for multiple people or things, and to get discussions about this going in
the classroom. An example of this is Set One, Card One: ”Sally keeps shouting out answers.” This
scenario could be argued that it is showing a lack of respect for others, including the students and
teacher. It could also show a lack of respect for learning.
Below are listed several options for use. Using the two separate sets of scenario cards, you could use
more than one option. For example, you could complete the walk around the room the first day and allow
students to either complete the group showdown, partner talk, or independent practice the following day.
R-E-s-p-e-c-t Activities
Options for Use:
• Room Walk Around (Whole Group): Place the four large cards/flags around the room, with each one of the respects (others,
learning, property, and yourself) in a different corner. Read the scenario cards aloud, one at a time, and have students walk to
the corner they believe this scenario is either showing or not showing. Lead a discussion about why students chose different
areas.
• Another option may be having a group of students (rather than the whole class) be the ones who walk around the room
and decide which corner the scenario matches. Let the group share their answers with the class. Have all other students
show a Thumbs Up if they agree with the group or thumbs down if they disagree with the choice. Lead a discussion.

• Room Walk Around (Independent or Partner): Place a scenario card in various places around the room. Have students walk around
the room alone or with a partner, reading the various scenarios. They will record their answers on the recording sheet.

• Showdown Group Activity: Using the Kagan cooperative learning activity, Showdown! Have students play Showdown using
whiteboards or paper to complete the recording sheet together.
• To play Showdown:
• Put students into small groups. Place the scenario cards in a facedown pile in the center of the group.
• Desiganate a Captain for the first round. The turn of Captain will rotate clockwise with each round. During the turn,
the Captain, chooses the top card and reads aloud.
• Independently, each student in the group will record on their white board or paper the answer to the card, which in
this activity will be whether it is showing or not showing respect for others, learning, property, or yourself.
Students can just write ‘others, learning, property, or yourself’.
R-E-s-p-e-c-t Activities
Options for Use:

• Showdown Continued:
• When each student records their answer privately, they put a Thumbs Up to siganl they are ready.
• When the captain notices all thumbs up, they call out “Showdown!”
• All group members show their answers; the group discusses their answers.
• They must agree how to complete the recording sheet. *More than one answer is allowed
• The person on the left of the Captain becomes the new Captain and the activity repeats.

• Partner Activity: Have students work with a partner, share the scenario cards, and complete the recording sheet together.

• Independent Activity: Read the scenario cards aloud and have students record their answers independently.

Note: Blank scenario cards have also been included if you would like students to come up with their own scenarios.
