Structured Essay Questions

1)
a) A mixture of O2(g) and O3(g) at pressure P and temperature T is in equilibrium in a rigid closed
container of volume V.
i. Express the density (d) of the gas mixture in terms of n1 , n2 , M1 , M2 and V.

Here, n1 = Amount of moles of O2 n2 = Amount of moles of O3

M1 = Molar mass of O2 M2 = Molar mass of O3

Essay Questions

1. A vessel of volume 300dm3 contains a gas X under a pressure of 1.5 x 105 Pa at 27℃. A vessel of
volume 500dm3 contains a gas Y at 127℃ under a pressure of 0.6 x 105 Pa. The two vessels were
connected by a thin tube and the temperature of the mixture was brought to 0℃. If gases X and Y
behave ideally, find the partial pressure of each component, the total pressure of the mixture, and
the mole fractions of X and Y in the mixture.

2. A mixture under constant temperature and pressure contains 70% N2, 16% O2, 10% Ar and 4.0% H2
by volume. Find the mass percentages of these gases.
(R. A. M. - N = 14 , O = 16 , H = 1.0 , Ar = 40)

3. When 1.6 g of a sample of KClO3 containing KCl as waste was completely thermally decomposed, the
O2 gas evolved was collected over water. The volume of gas collected was 400cm3 at 27℃ and
0.9 x 105 Pa. Find the percentage purity of KClO3 in the sample if 20% of the gas released is dissolved
in water.
(R. A. M. - K = 39 , O = 16 , Cl = 35.5 )
