Module 5: Dance History and Elements


 Dance – movement of body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given
space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy or simply
taking delight in the movement itself.
HISTORY OF DANCE
 9,000 years ago (Pre-historic time) they discovered DANCE through CAVE
PAINTINGS that found on INDIA (which depicts various scenes of hunting, child
birth, religious rites, burials, and communal drinking and dancing)
 From the earliest moments of known human history, dance accompanied ancient
rituals, spiritual gatherings and social events.
 As conduit of trance, spiritual force, pleasure, expression, performance, and
interaction.
 African tribes covered themselves in war-paint to the spreading of music and dance
across all corners of the world.
 Dance is used to seduce
 FIRST ROLE: Ritual- used for religious or non-religious ceremonies and practices
 SECOND ROLE: War dance- uses of props, such as sticks, sword and more.
 THIRD role: Entertainment- used to socialize and relieve stress.

ELEMENTS OF DANCE
BODY Body is the mobile figure or shape, felt by the dancer, seen by the others
Any human movement included in the act of dancing- it can include dance steps, facial

movements, partner lifts, gestures and even everyday movements such as walking.
Dancers interact space in myriad. They may stay in one place or they may travel from one

Module 2: Various Dance Forms


 Ballet- theatrical dance in which a formal academic dance technique- the dense
d’ecole-is combined with other artistic elements such as music, costume and stage
scenery.
 Modern Dance- a free, expensive style of dancing started in the early 20th century as
a reaction to classical ballet.
 Cultural Dance- another term for folk dance, or sometimes even for ethnic dance.
The term ‘Traditional’ is more frequently used when the emphasis is in the cultural
roots of dance.
 Dance Sports- social dancing in couples, popular as recreation and also as
competitive activity. ballroom dance.

 Pop dance- Originated in America in 1980. Most popular type of dance. The word
“pop” comes from the word popular. 1990, pop music started to hear on radio, TV and
much more. It became very popular because it was so easy to dance to and the lyrics
was too simple.
 Jazz dance- Performance dance and style that first emerged in the United States in
the early 20th century. Jazz dance may refer to vernacular jazz or to Broadway or
theatrical dance. Both genres build on African-American vernacular styles of dancing
that emerged with jazz music.

Module 3: Fundamental Dance Position of Arms and Feet

FEET POSITIONS
First Position: Feet close and heels parallel touching toes at 45 degrees
Second Position: Open Parallel strike sideward
Third Position: feet close-crossed heel in-step touching knees locked.
Fourth Position: One in front of the other foot of a pace distance.
Fifth Position: Heel of the front foot close to the big toe of the rear foot

ARM POSITIONS
First Position: Arms encircled in front at chest level, relaxed, fingers slightly apart.
Second Position: Arms raised sideways a little below shoulder level.
Third Position: One arm encircles overhead in the other raised sideways.
Fourth Position: One arm encircles like first position; the other arm over head
Fifth Position: both arms overhead

Plain Polka Step L foot in front, step R foot close to the L foot in rear. Step L foot in

Hop Polka Hop on L foot and step R forward, step L close to R in rear, step R foot
forward and pause. This maybe executed in any directions
Heel and Toe Polka Place L heel in fourth in front, touch left toe in rear. Take one plain polka
step forward, starting with L foot
Slide Polka Take 2 slide step forward and a plain polka. Slide L foot in front, Close R
to L foot in rear
