DESKTOP STUDY 2 : ADAYAR CANCER HOSPITAL

INTRODUCTION

 Adayar Cancer Centre is a cancer speciality hospital situated in Chennai,


India.
 The hospital came into the existence through Dr. Muthu Lakshmi Reddy
in June 18 , 1954.
 This is the south India’s first and country’s second comprehensive cancer
care centre.
 Around 1 lakh people are getting treatment in ACI and among that 66%
people are treated free.
 The institute has several other firsts to its credits and they include
 A department of Nuclear medical oncology in 1956
 Installing a linear accelerator in 1976
 Introducing a blood component therapy in 1978
 Introducing hyperthermia treatment in 1984
 Installing an ND-YAG surgical laser in 1985 and performing endoscopic
laser surgery.
 Intra operative electron therapy is available since 1972
 First in the country to introduce Rapid Arc treatment in January 2009

 It is a government hospital with 80 doctors , 250 nurses and 50
technicians.

 It is located in Chennai district , Tamilnadu state in India.

OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT

 This dep. is divided in to two spaces


1.Consulting
2.Treatment
 The space is provided in such a way that 15 doctors can consult
simultaneously.
 The corridor is provided with seats to accommodate waiting for patients.
 OP department is well planned with waiting area and reception to get
appointment for consulting doctors.

The spaces are


designed in a linear
network pattern. Long
narrow corridors
connect the different
spaces.

MAIN BLOCK PLAN

 The space is designed spaciously with well ventilated.


 All the Outpatient ( OP) rooms are provided in ground floor so that
access is easy.
 Radiotherapy and radiology department is easily accessible from O.P
department.
 Less lobby spaces to accommodate large volume of patients.

 Radiation machine rooms - 4 linear accelerators.
 IORT – Infra Operated Radiation theatres

RADIO DIAGNOSIS DEPARTMENT

 This dep. Consists of x-ray , CT scan , mammography , ultrasound CT


scan.
 There are dark rooms for developing x-rays.
 All these machines have control room from where it is operated.
 The walls are lead shielded in order to prevent the emission of radiation
beyond the room , so that radiation does not affect the patients.

RADIOLOGY BLOCK PLAN

 The radio diagnosis dep. Is easily accessible from the O.P.D as it is


present on the ground floor.
 Corridor spaces are congested as it has been used as a waiting space for
the diagnosis.
 But there is no separate space provided for waiting in design.

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY BLOCK

 Activities in this block


 Male general ward
 Female general ward
 ICU
 This block holds in-patient department.
 Examination room is located in each floor.
 The corridors are of 3.2m width.
 Dining space is provided for doctors and nurses separately.

BLOCK PLAN
 The room are provided with lack of ventilation.
 Nurse rooms are strategically placed at the center to view the wards.
 The examination rooms are located at dead end of the block.

 Lack of sufficient toilet facilities.
 The waiting space for patients is not sufficient.
 The medical oncology block is not properly maintained and equipped.

FACILITES

 The institute has a hospital , a research center, a center of preventive


oncology and a college of oncology sciences.
 Its center for preventive oncology has been working in conjunction with
NGO and government hospitals to conduct cancer screening camps and
pap smear treats at the district level.
 More than 95,000 to 1,00,000 patients from all parts of India visit the
hospital annually.
 In Adayar cancer institute, the treatment is either made free or subsidized.
 All tabs are equipped, ventilate and spacious, but all the labs are not
situated on one floor.
 The library and museums are not easily accessible, not properly
organized and maintained.
 It also includes Nurse hostel. Doctor`s residence. Stores, Library.
Laundry, Offices and Labs.

AUDITORIUM

 Parking is located in the entry zone.


 There is separate parking for two wheelers and four wheelers.
 Separate parking facilities for the staff is also provided.
 There are 150 car parking for the public and 60 car parking for staffs.

CSSD

 It is situated in the Patel block.


 The clean areas and dirt areas are not properly segregated.
 The CSSD departments is not properly maintained.
 Sizes is 8m x 4m.

LABORATORIES
 All labs are well equipped, ventilated and spacious.
 The labs are scattered on different floors.

MATERIALS

 Mosaic flooring is used in the OPD.


 Granite flooring in the consultation area, dispensary, operation theatre,
general wards, pediatric ward, ratio diagnosis departments, radiotherapy
and branchy therapy areas.
 Brown Vinyl flooring in the biochemistry labs, microbiology labs and
histopathology labs.
 Cement flooring in corridors, kitchen and laundry.
 Marble flooring is used in the Central sterilization department.
 Reinforced Concrete walls with finishes in paint.
 No special treatments in celling expect in the new block.

BLOOD BANK

 It is located on the Bhagwan Adwaith Jain complex.


 The blood bank is completely sterile.
 The size of the room is 15m x 20m.
 The blood bank holds the sample collection, testing and sterilizing.

INCINERATION

 The incineration room IS placed in the service bank with an area of


25sq.m according to the wind direction.
 All the fumes are discharged into chimney pipes of height 6mt from
ground level.

ELECTRICITY

 There are two transformers one of 500KV and another of 1000KV.


 There is a generator of 11KV in case of power shut down.
