User Experience
4
The SAP Fiori user experience (UX) has redefined the way enterprise users
work. With a new visual design and appearance, SAP is making work
more delightful and ready for the next-generation workforce.

This chapter provides an overview of SAP Fiori, the role-based and intuitive user inter-
face (UI) for SAP S/4HANA Cloud and the intelligent suite. We’ll start with an introduc-
tion to the SAP Fiori design system, with a focus on the browser-based UX most users
can use for their daily work. The SAP Fiori design system also has design languages for
native apps for mobile devices, which we’ll cover in subsequent sections.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud software apps have been designed to fit typical use cases for users.
Nevertheless, organizations and end users often want to adapt the UX for their specific
needs. Users in particular may want to define favorites and personalize the selection
and layout of data. UI adaptation by key users and end users is covered in Section 4.3.
The final section of this chapter concludes with a brief summary of the main points.

4.1 SAP Fiori Design System

SAP Fiori is the target design system for all SAP products, so we’ll start this chapter with
an overview of SAP Fiori before continuing with an overview of how SAP S/4HANA
Cloud provides the SAP Fiori UX, including accessing apps through the SAP Fiori
launchpad, the useful services available to users everywhere, the main SAP Fiori app
patterns used by SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and finally how artificial intelligence (AI) can
enhance the UX.

4.1.1 Introduction to SAP Fiori

Providing a coherent and delightful UX for the multitude of SAP products with thou-
sands of apps in total—leveraging various technologies such as web, mobile, and
conversational—requires a comprehensive design system. SAP Fiori, the design sys-
tem for SAP solutions, has received numerous design awards over the years.
SAP Fiori starts with core values, practices, and principles. Values are led by SAP’s cor-
porate values. One key value is inclusion, for instance, supporting people with visual
disabilities (the topic of accessibility).

97

Practices include helping ensure that SAP conducts user research, defines personas,
provides guidelines, and so on. In fact, SAP has gone further and defined a design-
driven development approach to help ensure that end user needs have been ade-
quately captured upfront and are later properly supported by the resulting apps.
4
SAP Fiori adheres to five design principles, as follows:
쐍 Role-based
The UX is designed for you, your needs, and how you work.
쐍 Adaptive
Apps can be used on different form factors, such as desktop or mobile.
쐍 Simple
The design system includes only what is necessary by avoiding clutter and using
progressive disclosure to give users access to information as needed.
쐍 Coherent
Many apps feel as though they all belong to the same “family”; that is, they behave
consistently, and they seem coherent.
쐍 Delightful
SAP Fiori makes an emotional connection to the user—delighting the user with a
positive connection to the experience.

The SAP Fiori design system includes design languages for dedicated technologies:
web, native mobile (one for iOS and one for Android), and conversational. Each design
language specifies the look and feel, controls and floor plans, and common functions

and includes guidelines and templates for designers and developers.
Standing still means falling back, so SAP ensures that the SAP Fiori design system Whenever you launch an app, it runs in the SAP Fiori launchpad, so that, wherever you

SAP actively investigates whether and how users can benefit from these technologies
through the further evolution of the SAP Fiori design system. If you need to develop your own apps, SAP provides development tools, like SAP Busi-

The SAP Fiori launchpad also provides powerful navigation features. Multiple ways
exist for you to find an app beyond going to a page and clicking on a tile: search; the
navigation menu, the app finder, recent activities, and frequently used apps. In addi-
tion, when clicking on a link to a document or business object such as an account or
sales order, you’re offered a number of relevant links, rather than automatically going
to a default “display” app. In addition, you can also personalize which navigation links
you would like to be offered for each link type.
In the example shown in Figure 4.5, a user has clicked on the sold-to-party Top Bike
(USCU-CUS69), and the popup window provides a default link at the top (Top Bike),

The list report is a key floor plan for managing your work on specific business objects,
for example, the Manage Purchase Contracts app shown in Figure 4.7.

Figure 4.5 Intent-Based Navigation

4.1.5 Apps
With SAP Fiori, SAP has introduced new floor plans (patterns) for working with busi-
ness data, where you can first get an overview of what needs your attention before div-
ing into the details. People’s information needs depend on the role they have; for
example, a manager most likely needs aggregated and key information, ideally in a
graphical form, whereas team members may primarily need lists of items that need
processing or the details of the items themselves, with all relevant business context. In
all cases, users can profit from graphical representations of the data in addition to text
or lists and tables. Also, powerful search and filtering is essential—and a key element of
SAP Fiori apps.
Figure 4.6 shows an example of an overview page, which contains cards displaying both
aggregated information as well as the most important objects needing work. Note that
you can filter the view using the filter bar at the top. Furthermore, you can drill down

from each of the cards to work on details and resolve issues.

The filter bar enables powerful search capabilities, including auto-suggestions in a

dropdown list as well as your recently entered values. Notice how these lists can also
include graphical representations in addition to text and numbers.
A particularly powerful feature of these list reports is the ability to define your own fil-
4
ter variants, which you can select rapidly using a simple dropdown list. In this way, you
can define the subsets of data you typically work on and access these datasets easily
without having to always re-enter filter values. For even quicker access, you can save a
variant as a dedicated tile on one of your SAP Fiori launchpad pages.
The object page floor plan lets you work on the details of a particular business object.
Figure 4.8 shows an example of the object page floor plan, including graphical ele-
ments, for working on a purchase contract. Figure 4.9 shows an example of a classic
object page, with text and numerals, for working on a sales order, which remains a pop-
ular layout for power users.
In all these examples, notice how the header bar is available so you can access useful
services provided by the SAP Fiori launchpad anytime.

Figure 4.9 A Classic Object Page for Changing a Sales Order

An example of the analytical list page pattern is in use in the Monitor Purchase Order
Items app, shown in Figure 4.10.

Figure 4.8 The Object Page Floor Plan for Working on Business Objects

In some cases, users need to quickly navigate through lists with tens of thousands of
entries to work on specific areas. The analytical list page is the relevant pattern in such
cases and provides users with an optional graphical representation of the filter bar, as
well as a graphical summary and drilldown capabilities to view the data in a filtered

4.2 Mobile User Experience

A clear trend in the private user space as well as in the consumer space is also making
its way into the enterprise space: People no longer interact with applications and sys-
tems through PCs or laptops. Users prefer the freedom to work wherever they are,
using the device they have at hand at that point in time.
This expectation sets the standard for SAP S/4HANA Cloud from a mobile perspective.
This robust solution must provide access through a desktop in an office, through a tab-
let on a campus, on the shop floor, and even on phone while on the go.
The full functional scope of SAP S/4HANA Cloud is accessible through all major brows-
ers running on desktops (PCs or laptops).
To support software users on mobile devices, we can differentiate between use cases
and activities by looking at the daily life of an end user. Let’s briefly consider a few
modes of activity:
쐍 Tablet usage
A user of SAP S/4HANA Cloud can perform nearly all daily activities in a browser on
a tablet device and expect a similar UX as on the desktop.
쐍 Phone usage
Not all, but a number of activities can be performed in a browser on mobile phones
as well. Dedicated applications are not meant to be used on phones.

Figure 4.11 An Example of Machine Intelligence Using Ranking and Explanations

108 109
4 User Experience 4.2 Mobile User Experience

쐍 Native application usage

In some use cases, the user is permanently on the road and absolutely relies on
mobile applications to get their work done—for example, a maintenance technician
using an app to plan the day’s work, document each visit, keep track of repairs done,
and so on. This app must always be available and perhaps must even allow work 4
offline if no network is available on site. Therefore, although the SAP Fiori UX runs
nicely on mobile phones in a web browser, a native mobile experience is even better
and is also needed to support offline work. For some workflows, such as scanning
many products, native apps are much faster. Additionally, the newest generation of
mobile devices comes with on-device machine learning, which can be used directly
by native apps.

Let’s look at a few examples of how SAP S/4HANA Cloud UIs for tablets and smart-
phones can support users in different business roles. As a reference, in the following
sections, we’ll always describe the behavior on desktop screens first.

4.2.1 Mobile Web Experience of an Inventory Manager

Figure 4.13 Example App for an Inventory Manager: Tablet and Mobile Phone
In the area of logistics, an inventory manager will probably use the Post Goods Receipt
for Purchasing Document app, shown in Figure 4.12. As shown in Figure 4.13, notice how
the app works seamlessly across all devices (i.e., desktop, tablet, and mobile phone). 4.2.2 Mobile Web Experience of an Internal Sales Representative
In the area of sales, a user will typically prepare sales proposals with the Manage Sales
Item Proposals app, shown in Figure 4.14 and Figure 4.15. As users with the internal sales
representative role often work also on the go, the apps they use daily must generally
support all devices (i.e., desktop, tablet, and mobile phone).

orders will involve the Display Sales Order – VA03 app, shown in Figure 4.16 and Figure
4.17. As with the Sales Item Proposal app, the Display Sales Order – VA03 app can also be
used by internal sales representatives in mobile situations, in addition to the typical in-
office use case.

4.2.3 Native Mobile Apps

As described earlier in Section 4.1, the SAP Fiori design system also supports native
mobile apps. With SAP Fiori for iOS and SAP Fiori for Android, SAP created a design lan-
guage that unifies its deep understanding of business user needs, the rigorous require-
ments of the modern enterprise, and principles of good mobile design. With this design
language, organizations and partners can make beautiful, native mobile apps, as shown
in Figure 4.18.
SAP Customer Guide is mobile app based on SAP Fiori for iOS for use with SAP
S/4HANA Cloud. This app helps finance managers prepare for C-level customer meet-
ings by providing financial and commercial data to inform the conversation with the
customer, such as contracts, purchase orders (POs), accounts receivables, payment
behavior, and so on. This app thus increases productivity by making key customer
information available at your fingertips while on the go. Figure 4.19 shows two views of
the SAP Customer Guide mobile app.

4.2.4 SAP SDK for iOS and SAP SDK for Android
SAP SDK for iOS extends the standard Swift Apple iOS framework with the reusable UI
components from the SAP Fiori for iOS design language. Additionally, the SDK provides
application programming interfaces (APIs) that integrate apps with the services avail-
4
able through SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).
This approach enhances design efficiency through the SAP Fiori design language. Deve-
lopment efficiency is supported through a library of reusable SAP Fiori app compo-
nents and through preconfigured integration in two areas: integration with services on
SAP BTP and subsequent integration into SAP-based backend software through the SAP
Connectivity service.
With these tools, developers can more easily and more efficiently build native iOS apps
that integrate with SAP software.
SAP provides a similar level of efficiency and support for Android, via the Android
design language for SAP Fiori and SAP SDK for Android, with its library of reusable SAP
Fiori app controls.
Figure 4.18 SAP Fiori for iOS App for Store Managers
Companies also have the option of providing native apps for both iOS and Android
with a single code line by using the mobile development kit provided by SAP Mobile
Services.

4.3 User Interface Adaptation

SAP provides powerful and intuitive tools for administrators and key users to adapt the
layout of pages and individual SAP Fiori apps. In addition, end users can intuitively per-
sonalize the layout of pages and customize many aspects of existing apps.
Adaptations made as UI adaptations at runtime by key users apply to the whole app
and therefore also to all users of the app. In contrast, when an individual end user per-
sonalizes an app, these customization choices apply only to this individual user.

4.3.1 Key User Adaptation

With UI adaptation at runtime, key users can adapt the UI of applications in the SAP Fiori
launchpad to fit their company’s particular tasks and processes. This customization can
be set up intuitively, without needing new code. Adaptations can even be published as a
separate app, called an app variant, that can be made available to all users. The top of
Figure 4.20 shows the navigation bar of the Manage App Variants app. All adaptations
can always be reverted, and key users can always reset the app to its default state.
When you’re in the adaptation mode as a key user, you can edit all UI elements (such as
fields, groups of fields, and sections) that are highlighted when you hover over or select
them. Figure 4.20 shows the adaptation mode for the Manage Sales Orders app, which

UI, but the element is not permanently deleted from the app. You can add the ele-
ment again at any point within its original container.
쐍 Adding a UI element
To add additional fields that are already part of an object displayed on the UI, for
example, a group of UI elements, select that group and click the plus sign icon (+). 4
Then, from the available fields list, select the field or fields you want to add. Figure
4.22 shows an example using the Manage Sales Orders app.

Figure 4.20 Adaptation Mode for Editing All UI Elements, Including Fields, Groups of Fields, or
Sections

In adaptation mode, a key user can change a variety of things, such as the following:
쐍 Moving a UI element
To move a UI element, simply drag and drop it to the new position on the screen.
You can also achieve the same result by cutting and pasting a UI element to a new
position. To cut a UI element, click on the element (or on the group) and then click
on the scissor icon.
Figure 4.22 Adding Existing Fields by Hovering over the Respective Area

In the same way as for adding fields, you can also create groups and add fields later.
쐍 Change settings
Some UI elements allow you to change their settings. Click the UI element and select
the Settings icon. For example, you can change the links that are displayed in the
popup window for a smart link.
You can change the settings of a UI element, as shown in Figure 4.23 for the Sold-to
Party smart link within the Manager Sales Orders app. Similarly, as shown in Figure
Figure 4.21 Removing or Cutting Fields from a Group of UI Elements
4.23, you can also rename, combine, or split UI elements.

쐍 Removing a UI element Because UI adaptations can be saved as app variants, you’ll see the saved app variant.
You can simply remove a UI element by clicking the element and selecting the Figure 4.24 shows the information on Sales Organization (an added field below the

An administrator can publish a newly created app variant to the homepages of the rel-
evant end users later.

4.3.2 End User Personalization 4

End users of SAP S/4HANA Cloud can personalize the SAP Fiori launchpad as well as
individual applications to suit the way they work best. Personalization options are
available only to the end user who adjusted the personalization setting. End user per-
sonalization must be enabled by a system administrator.
In the following sections, we’ll look at personalizing both the SAP Fiori launchpad and
individual apps.

Personalizing the SAP Fiori Launchpad

You’ll find personalization options via the user actions menu in the SAP Fiori launch-
pad, as shown in Figure 4.25. Choose Edit Current Page.

Personalizing Apps
One of the most useful ways to personalize apps is to use selection views, which are
available wherever a filter bar appears at the top of an app—typically for lists. If you
have particular filter values that you regularly use, you can save these values as selec-
tion views. You can then quickly select a selection view, rather than having to enter sev-
eral filter values each time. Note that you can also make a selection view your default
view, which will appear every time you open the application.

4 User Experience 4.4 Summary

The SAP Fiori launchpad header bar enables access to a number of useful services—in
particular, search, notifications, collaboration through a digital assistant, the web assis-
tant, and settings. In addition, the SAP Fiori launchpad provides intent-based naviga-
tion, giving you a choice of destinations when clicking on a link for a business object.

SAP Fiori apps provide graphical elements and charts in addition to showing just text
and numbers, helping users work more effectively. Many typical use cases are covered
by the main floor plans defined by SAP Fiori. SAP Fiori has a number of ways for sup-
porting users with AI, such as rankings and Situation Handling, and for building user
trust using explanations.

Figure 4.28 Saving Filters: Defining and Saving Selection Views Using mobile devices, most of your work can be performed in a browser on a tablet, and
a decent amount, on a smartphone. For certain dedicated use cases, native apps are
more suitable, for example, SAP Customer Guide.
Finally, SAP Fiori gives administrators and users many options for adapting and per-
sonalizing the UX: for defining and personalizing spaces and pages as well as individual

develop your own apps, both for browser-based apps as well as for native mobile apps.
Now that you are familiar with the overall UX of SAP S/4HANA Cloud from this chapter,
the next chapter will turn to analytics. As you’ll see, analytics plays an important part
in providing a good UX.

Figure 4.29 Saving a Selection View as a Tile on the Launchpad

You can also personalize and save KPIs as tiles too, which we’ll discuss in more detail in
Chapter 5. In addition to selection variants and KPIs, you can also personalize individ-
ual table layouts for visualizing lists.

4.4 Summary
In this chapter, we provided an overview of the SAP S/4HANA UX. We introduced you
to the SAP Fiori design system and provided insights into the mobile UX on tablets and
smartphones as well as on options for adapting the UI. The SAP Fiori UX provided by
SAP S/4HANA Cloud helps users work efficiently and effectively on desktops as well as
on mobile devices.
Most users access SAP S/4HANA Cloud using a browser from a desktop, laptop, or tab-
let, using the web-based SAP Fiori launchpad. Many ways are available to start your
applications: through the tiles or links on pages, via search, through the menu, or in fre-
quently used/recently used lists.
