Gasket
As LCAL is current developing the type of gasket to be used, a 33 mm gasket with 66.5 kN/m peak
force has been assumed in the calculations. To ensure the adequacy of gasket and gasket groove
performance, the following checks have been carried out considering a long-term condition, with
𝛼cc,pl .= 0.6 and 𝛾c = 1.5.
Also, gasket performance has also been checked considering joint rotation and gasket gap
determined based on:
The joint rotation of 0.61° has been determined, which gives a gasket opening gap of
approximately 2.5 mm. As the 66.5 kN/m gasket is the ultimate force the gasket could apply, a
partial load factor of 1.1 has been considered in the calculations.
Gasket force typically relaxes by approximately more than 20% after segment installation. An
example of gasket short term relaxation is presented below. For circumferential joint shear dowels,
a 15% short term relaxation of gasket has been adopted while no further information is available
at the moment of designing this.

CALCULATIONS NOTES
The circumferential joint shear dowels design considers the following criteria:
▪ Keeping gasket in full compression
▪ Overturning stability of segments during ring erection (to hold segment in place)
▪ Rotational stability of lining ring under TBM torque

The most critical case would be installing a large segment at the the tunnel crown
while no segment else has been installed yet. The calculations above show that
2 out of 3 ANIX 80 (or equivalent) dowels would provide sufficient tensile capacity to
keep any large segment self standing, which would ensure the stability of all
segments during ring building even when the key stone is installed in the invert.
