WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
The world’s most popular TV quiz show started in UK in 1998. The idea has now spread to over 100
countries, including Greece and Spain.
One person, the contestant, must answer 15 multiple-choice questions correctly to win the £1m top
prize. If at any time they answer incorrectly, the game is over. A computer selects the questions from a
database of 2,500. Until that point, nobody knows what questions are about to be asked. The program gets
more serious as the money increases. Now contestants are really afraid of making a mistake. It’s possible, but
unusual, for a contestant to leave the show with no money at all.
Contestants can get help. One way is to “Phone a friend”. They may speak to a friend on the phone for
30 seconds to chat the question. The phrase “Can I phone a friend?” has now become part of modern everyday
English. You use it when you want to say “I don’t know the answer.”
