FOUR PILLARS OF FOOD SECURITY

>AVAILABILITY
refers to the physical existence of food.
On national level food availability is a combination of domestic food
production, commercial food imports and exports, food aid and
domestic food stocks. On household level food could be from own
production or bought from the local markets.

> ACCESS
Access is ensured when all households have enough resources to
obtain food in sufficient quantity, quality and diversity for a
nutritious diet.
> USE AND UTILIZATION
Use is defined by what food to purchase, how to prepare it and
allocate it within the household.
Utilization relates to the ability of the human body to take food and
convert it.

> STABILITY
is given when the supply on household level remains constant
during the year and in the long-term.
That includes food, income and economic resources.
• Refers to the availability and accessibility of an
GLOBAL individual to get sufficient quantity of food

FOOD that is reliable and affordable to the individual.

SECURITY • Food security also means that the people who

produce our foods are able to earn a decent,
living wage growing, producing, processing,
transporting and serving food. ( Over Grow the
System, 2015)
• A household is considered food secure when
its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of
starvation.
• According to The World Food Summit of
1996 defined food security as "when all
people at all times have access to sufficient,
safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy
and active life"
• The United States is leading international
efforts to address the need that people
around the world have for reliable sources of
quality food. American aid is, in part,
directed to food security - ensuring every
nation has the ability to reed its population
adequate amounts of nutritional foods.
IMPORTANCE OF GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY
Growth in the agriculture sector has been found, on average, to be at least twice
as effective in reducing poverty as growth in other sectors. Food insecurity -
often rooted in poverty - decreases the ability of countries to develop their
agricultural markets and economies.
Access to quality, nutritious food is fundamental to human existence. Secure
access to food can produce wide ranging positive impacts, including:
• Economic growth and job creation

• Poverty reduction
• Increased global security and stability

• Improved health and healthcare

Research is defined as a systematic study directed toward fuller scientific
knowledge or understanding of the subject studied. Development is the
systematic use of knowledge and understanding gained from research directed
toward the production of useful materials, devices, systems, or methods,
including design and development of prototypes and processes.

Research development - includes a diverse set of dynamic activities that vary by

institution. These activities include initiating and nurturing partnerships,
networks, and alliances between and among faculty at their institutions and
funding agencies; and designing and implementing strategic services for their
faculty and researcher constituents (such as workshops, trainings, program
officer visits, proposal editing, PR communications, funding opportunity
searches and dissemination, budget preparation, forms and submission
assistance, research team building, and administering campus limited submission
reviews)
