AVISIT REPORT FOR ENTEBBE AIRPORT

Introduction

As students of BEHS year two class Makerere university school of public health went to Entebbe
International Airport on Wednesday 26th April 2023 for a study visit. Entebbe International
Airport is the only international airport in Uganda. It is located about 6km southwest of Entebbe
town, on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. On arrival at the airport, we were received by Mr.
Nicholus Kamuntu who led and guided us as we walked around within the building and in
different rooms. He later handed us to other staff members who presented some aspects to us.
Among these include; Mr. Mubangizi Anthony, the plumbing supervisor who took us through
water safety, wastewater and human excreta management. Also Mr. Beard Anduku, one the
Marine staff who took us through occupational health and safety.

Objectives of the visit study

 To assess solid waste management at the airport

 To find out how wastewater and human excreta is managed at the airport.
 To assess health safety at the airport
 To assess the sanitary conditions at the airport.

Findings of our visit study at Entebbe airport.

Water Supply

The source of their water is National Water and Sewerage Corporation and then it is stored in
concrete water reservoirs (Domestic 1.3million liter, Fire fighting 1.2million liter capacities.
Reservoirs are kept covered with provisions for aeration, and located at least 100metres away
from the nearest sanitary facility. Water is distributed to different Airport facilities through
closed pipes most of them plastics. Reservoirs are cleaned after every six months. Water quality
monitoring is done every month. Tests are done that is; pH, TDS, TSS, DO, temperature and
Service provider in the names of Times Analytical Laboratory, does the monitoring under our
supervision.

2
Wastewater collection and conveyance

Their wastewater consists of used water from kitchen facilities and sanitary facilities. Kitchen
water (Sullage) mixes sanitary water after fat separators. Approximately 37.5cumecs discharged
to the sewers. Sanitary sewers convey sanitary sewage to the treatment plant while storm sewers
are used to convey storm water to the surrounding swamps, total sewer length for sanitary
sewage is 4.85km and that of storm water is 4.24km.For far distant places like several police
barracks and staff quarters, we use sewage trucks to convey sanitary sewage to their wastewater
treatment plant. This is done in a controlled safety environment. It is then treated where
biological system of wastewater treatment is used. Also wastewater quality monitoring is done
and it is done every after three months. Tests are done that is; PH, TDS, TSS, BOD, COD, DO,
Temperature, where it is done at different points that is; before discharge to Lagoons, at each of
the three ponds and at the effluent discharge point. Service provider in the names of Times
Analytical Laboratory does the monitoring under our supervision. They then model so as to
make rectifications and improvements. Effluent is discharged through a swamp prior to re-
joining the lake water.

Occupational health and safety at Entebbe airport

Mr. Benard Anduku took us through OSH at Uganda civil aviation authority, where he told the
objectives of OSH that is;

 Create awareness about OSH practices, procedures and regulations

 Appreciate the importance of OSH to employer and employees
 Promote OSH culture in UCAA
 Promote hazard and safety risk management. He also took us through how they manage
OSH at Uganda civil aviation authority and that is as follows;
 Developing OSH policies
 Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment and Carry out OSH audits and
inspections
 Implement health programs Measuring health and safety performance
 Manage organizational stress
 Prevention of accidents

VISIT REPORT OF BANGA BEACH

Introduction

The visit happened on Wednesday 26th April 2023, where I visited a beach called Banga beach
located in Entebbe municipality, division A, central 1, Banga Nakiwogo village . I was told it is
called Nakiwogo landing site. It is surrounded by stones since the area is rocky, the beach water
is dirty and also there is algae in the water as well as snail shells. There is no sand along the
beach meaning that it is not a sand beach. The manager who was in charge of the place is called
Mr. Mutyaba Charles.

Objectives of the visit study

 To assess the sanitary conditions for the beach.

 To find out whether the beach has the sanitary requirements.
 To assess the hygiene and safety of the food prepared at Banga beach.

Findings of my visit study.

Laundry and public bathing places

There were no places for laundry in the area. There were bathing places besides the toilets but
there was no provision of water in those bathrooms that is the taps in there were not bringing
water. This place was very clean.

Toilets

The toilets were available that is, water closets but inaccessible since they were locked. For me
to get access to these facilities, I first got keys from one of the administrators. Though I was told
by the manager of the place that the reason for keeping these toilets locked is to make sure they
are clean at all times. The toilets were screened for both males and females. There was provision
of anal cleansing materials in these toilets (toilet papers)

Urinals

On the side of the males' toilets, there were urinals. These urinals were in good sanitary
conditions as there was no sign of any smell. 4
Safety provisions

Life jackets and belts are provided to those going for boat cruise. There were no life savers and
the reason given by the manager was that it is because the beach is no longer used for swimming.

Registration

When I asked the manager whether the beach was registered with the local authority, he told me
that it is registered and that they have a license.

Food hygiene and safety

The hygiene of the food was good since the place where it is prepared, was clean, well
ventilated. Also the storage facility was in good sanitary conditions and it had shelves where
utensils are stored. Information from the respondent indicated these food preparation and storage
facilities are inspected once in a year by health inspectors. Some food in the storage facility, was
on the ground which could be source of contamination.

Solid waste management

There was provision of litter bins in the compound and they were fitted with efficient lids. There
were also signages directing people to put their litter and wastes in the bins. There was no sign of
waste sorting since the litter bins that were there had no labels showing different kinds of waste
to put in each bin.

Compound maintenance

The sanitary conditions of the compound were fair. There were no littered rubbish in the
compound but the only problem was the presence of flooded storm water in the compound.

Hand washing equipment

There was a hand washing point where there water and soap which are used for washing hands.
The water was provided in a bucket with a tap, which was on a stand with a basic where they
wash their hands from. Also liquid soap was provided.

5
Employees

Findings indicated that there are four permanent employees/ workers at the beach but I was not
told the number of the temporary workers and therefore, it remained unknown.

Water Supply

Banga beach is supplied with water by National water and sewerage cooperation however, the
supply of water is not constant.

Food handlers

Food handlers are not medically examined as there was no evidence of their medical certificates

The hygiene of these food handlers was okay.

Recommendations

The management should employ instructors/ life savers in order to prevent the risks of drowning
though there is no swimming in the beach.

There should be drainage channels to drain the flooded storm water in the compound-
Management

The management should provide shelves where food can be stored safely without getting
contaminated.

All employees/food handlers should be medically examined before they start working since some
maybe having some infections of which they can be transferred to other people through food.

The sanitary facilities that is toilets and urinals should always be kept unlocked so that people
want to use them can access them without first going to the staff members to ask for the keys.

National water and sewerage cooperation should provide constant supply of sufficient, clean and
wholesome water to the beach since many activities are carried out which need constant supply
of water.

6
Conclusion

In conclusion, the aspects that were being looked out for during beach visit include; laundry and
public bathing places, toilets and urinals, water supply, food safety and hygiene among others of
which the sanitary conditions of some of these were good though some other aspects need to be
revised/checked on such that the general sanitary conditions can be excellent. Some of these
areas to work on include; constructing drainage channels to drain away flooded storm water in
the compound, having life savers, constant supply of water by National water, examining food
handlers medically, among others.
