CONTRAST LINKERS
1. BUT:
LINKERS POSITION
BUT 1- To contrast to ideas in the same sentence. E.g. The weather was bad but she enjoyed the trip.
2- Beginning of the second sentence (Informal). E.g. He likes romantic films. But don’t tell anybody!

2. HOWEVER, NEVERTHELESS:
LINKERS POSITION
HOWEVER, 1- Beginning of the second sentence. (linker + comma). E.g. We enjoyed the concert. However, we didn’t have very good seats.
2- It can also go in the middle of a sentence or at the end (linker + comma). E.g. He hated York. He did not, however, want to move. /
NEVERTHELESS, Amy often tells lies. She would never steal, however.
(formal) 1- Beginning of the second sentence. (linker + comma). E.g. He decided to go out to the cinema. Nevertheless, he didn’t tell his family
where he was going.

3. ALTHOUGH, EVEN THOUGH, THOUGH:


LINKERS POSITION
ALTHOUGH/THOUGH 1- Beginning of the sentence. Linker + sentence. E.g. Although it was late, she decided to phone him.
EVEN THOUGH (more emphasis) 2- In the middle. Linker + sentence. E.g. She decided to phone him, even though it was late.

4. DESPITE , IN SPITE OF:


LINKERS POSITION
DESPITE 1- Beginning sentence. Linker + noun / +ing / + the fact (that) + sentence E.g. Despite working all day, Teresa didn’t feel at all tired.
IN SPITE OF 2- In the middle. Linker + noun / +ing / + the fact (that) + sentence E.g. We got to school on time in spite of the heavy traffic.

5. WHILE, WHEREAS:
LINKERS POSITION
WHILE 1- Beginning of the sentence. Linker + sentence. E.g. While I accept that he’s not perfect, I quite like that man.
WHEREAS 2- In the middle. Linker + sentence. E.g. The handset I’ve received is blue, whereas the one in the advertisement is red.
