- AN

We use "a" in front of a word that starts with a consonant


sound.
* For example: a book, a lamp, a stereo.

Sometimes the first letter is a vowel.


* For example:
"a university” or “a European language" (sounds like consonant “y”)
“Two and a half men” (sounds like consonant “j”)

We use "an" in front of a word that starts with a vowel sound.


* For example: an apple, an architect, an idea

Sometimes the first letter is a consonant.


* For example:
“an honest man” or “an hour”
In this case the we don’t say the “h”
