Pay attention to the R-words to activate the brain for learning!

1. Objective (Rigor) - SMART and should be visible on your board daily.

1. To identify Breeds of cattle 2. To understand the breed’s origin and characteristics 3. To analyze the breed’s
importance in livestock production

2. Opening (Retrieval) – How will you "hook" your students into the lesson--at both the thinking and
emotional level?

 What will you do to open the lesson to motivate and engage the students’ interest in the content?
 How will you help students make connections to prior knowledge?
 How will you identify and present your essential questions, Central focus, and Learning Targets (I CAN
statements)?
 How will you identify / teach / assess language demands?
 How will you introduce language supports?
 Is your opening congruent to the objective?
 I would throw a video of a cow up on the screen and have a class discussion asking to define
the breed.
 I would then point out some of the characteristics of the cow and see if they could connect any
dots
 I would clearly write the objectives up on the board
 Any vocabulary I would go over on PowerPoint I would also give an example of so students
could use that example to remember the word

3. Teacher Input (Relevance) – What information is needed for the students to gain the knowledge/skill in the
objective? (Be sure you have done a task analysis to break the information/skill into small manageable
steps). How will you use strategies, technology, learning styles? What vocabulary and skills do the students
need to master the material? Are the strategies you plan to use congruent to the objective?
 Increased knowledge of each cattle breeds.
 Increase knowledge of characteristics of each cattle breed.
 I will use PowerPoint presentation
 Basic vocabulary terms will be provided a word wall will be used

 Model (Routing) – Outline your I DO activities. Be sure to model strategies and academic language
supports needed.
 Making a T-Chart with cattle breeds and their characteristics
 Highlighting different areas of a map where different cattle breeds originated from.

 Guided Practice – Students demonstrate a grasp of new learning under the teacher’s direct
supervision. The teacher moves around the room to provide individual remediation as needed. “Praise,
prompt, and leave” is an excellent strategy to use. Outline your WE DO activities. Be sure to incorporate
strategies and academic language supports that are needed.
 List the following on the paper: List the breed's name, list three different things that make it your favorite breed
and color in the cattle breed.

 Independent Practice (Retaining/Rehearsing) – Students demonstrate an independent

application of new skill. Outline your YOU DO activities. Students demonstrate an independent
application of new skill. Be sure to praise and assess strategies and academic language supports that are
being used.
● Crossbreeding: Worksheet Assignment #1 After students have gone through the PowerPoint with me, they will be given
an “Crossbreeding: Worksheet.” The worksheet correlates with the lesson that we have just gone over.

● Cattle Breed Terminology: Worksheet Assignment #2 After students have gone through the PowerPoint with me, they
will be given an “Cattle Breed Terminology: Worksheet.” The worksheet correlates with the lesson that we have just gone
over.

● “Cattle Breeds: Project” Assignment #3 List the following on the paper: List the breed's name, list three different things
that make it your favorite breed and color in the cattle breed.

 Check for Understanding (Recognizing) – Practice doesn't make perfect; it makes

permanent. So, make sure the students understand how to proceed before moving to the practice phase
of the lesson. You may need to stop and reteach, so students practice correctly. How do you plan to
assess understanding? What HOTQs will you ask? List at least 3

● “Cattle Breeds”: Test Assignment #4 This assessment will be used to see the progress that the students have learned
through this lesson and the other assignments. The test is composed of 3 sections: Multiple Choice, Written and Fill in the
blank. Each of these sections has gotten its information from PowerPoint or from one of the assignments listed above.

 How will you check for understanding or reteach?

I would hold class discussion asking questions from the topic from the day before to make sure that we are still
on track.

4. Assessment – How will we know that the students have individually mastered the objective? What
evidence will be collected? What will be an acceptable score? What evidence will be collected to demonstrate
mastery of language demands?
I would give an exam over all the breeds that were talked about throughout the whole lesson.

5. Resources - What materials will you need for a successful lesson?

● “Crossbreeding: Worksheet” needed to be able to understand the lesson effectively.

● “Cattle Breed Terminology: Worksheet” needed to be able to understand the lesson effectively.

● “Cattle Breed: Project” needed to be able to understand the lesson effectively while also using partner activities.

● “Cattle Breed: Test” needed to be able to gauge if the students were able to learn the materials for the lesson.
6. Closure (Re-exposure) – How will you have the students end the lesson/reflect upon what was learned?
Exit Ticket- Answering three questions. 2 questions would be about the topic from that day and the
third would be over what topic would be covered the next day.
