Abstract. Modular wall greening is systematic, quickly to make scenery, easy to assembly and
other advantages. This paper discusses three typical modular green wall systems and their
structures, matrix selection, maintenance and applicability. Wishing to providing green wall
design strategies and construction design reference for architects and landscape designers.
Introduction
There are ecological benefits to install green walls. The benefits are reduction of thermal loading to
buildings, air purification, noise attenuation, ecological habitat, positive urban psychology,
reduction of heat island effect.
Modular systems are often pre-grown, providing an ‘instant’ green effect upon completion of the
installation. In the system the frameworks are mounted on the wall, then the planting panels are
installed on the frame. Modular systems consist of square or rectangular panels that hold growing
media to support plant material. The Panels can be made by plastic, stretch polystyrene, synthetic
fiber, clay, metal, concrete, or other materials. Plants pattern, species, and colors are usually
designed in a nursery according to the customers requests in advance. After several months
of cultivation, the planting panels are shipped to the site for installation on the frames.
