EXPERIENCE ON A TUTORIAL ON ROOF COMPUTING DURING

THE EAIT 2018 CONFERENCE

Fifth International Conference on Emerging Applications of Information Technology (EAIT-2018)
January 12-13, 2018, Kolkata, India.

Asesh Das
Senior Scientist: Clear Avenue, MD./Retd. Professor of Computer Science-Pennsylvania College of Technology-
Penn State University, State College, PA.

 It was a 3 hour tutorial on ROOF computing. 2 PM- 5 PM. It was preceded by another 3 - hour tutorial
on traditional IOT and analytics, 10 AM to 1 PM.
 The title of the tutorial was;-----IOT REVOLUTION with REAL-TIME ONSITE OPERATIONS FACILITATION
(ROOF Computing) An introduction, research challenges and where you can participate.
 Attendants were grad & under grad engineering/computer science/technology students, faculties,
scientists from different organizations.
 The tutorial was very well-received. Right at the beginning it was declared that, since it is still in
progress and P1931.1 has not been published yet by IEEE, inside developments cannot be shown
explicitly.

Briefly----:

During the talk and pre- post- tutorial discussions:-

RELATED General TOPICS which are evolving were:

Security & Interoperability
Networking
Artificial Intelligence
Software Engineering
Communication Technologies
Collaborative Computing
Operating System
Analytics
4G to 5G

For the ROOF --Discussions have been edited as follows:

1. POWER SUPPLY ISSUES,
2. INTEROPERABILITY ISSUES,
3. ANALYTICS,
4. SECURITY,
5. BLOCK CHAINS,
6. EVOLVING ROOF SCENARIOS,
7. and ULTIMATE EXPERIMENTAL STRATEGIES,
8. How to study Roof Computing.

Item-1: POWER SUPPLY ISSUES

 If there are Roof mounted cars or ambulances (think of rural area emergency services),
constant power supply may be a problem. This problem must be carefully addressed in
Roof mounted cars to cars communications.
 What will be the source of power supply in micro-Roof operations ? And, in all Roof
wireless sensors.
 Trustable and tested models are needed on the co-existence of Roof (and multiple
Roofs) in communication with traditional existing NB-IOT systems.

Item-2: INTEROPERABILITY ISSUES

 Interoperability issues with different types of devices & possible sources of aberrations.
 Interoperability issues will be severe in Roof mounted drone-to-drone or car-to-car
communications.

Item-3: ANALYTICS
 Sensor analytics and stream analytics must be made...and how would you propose to
use it.
 [...Surprisingly, I found one young TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES scientist--Snehasis
Banerjee who is an expert in this line. Syam & Ambika has included him in the P1931.1 Working Group,
and possibly during the next meeting he will be able to give a talk in this line.]
 Roof computing for disaster recovery vs Roof computing's recovery from disaster:--
metrics and analyics studies need to be made.

Item-4: SECURITY QUESTIONS

 Physical Security Questions. Physical/MAC/Network Attacks in Roof systems.
 Side channel attack scenarios are to be seen. Phase 1: Interaction Phase, Phase 2:
Exploitation Phase.
 Cross layer attacks on roof system need to be seen
 ==> comes from lack of interaction between MAC and routing layers. , attacks propagate from the MAC
layer, where they are manifested as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, to the routing layer, causing serious
degradation of network performance in terms of the achieved throughput, latency and connectivity. ...can cause
congestion in the network by either generating an excessive amount of traffic or by generating specific traffic
patterns that prevent certain nodes from communicating with other nodes.

Item-5: BLOCKCHAIN
 Roof computing with its four walls appears to be very much suitable for blockchain
operations, especially in "clinical trials".
 Roof will address public blockchain or only private blockchain ? How will the Roof
determine who is allowed to participate in the P2P public network ? [Bitcoin is public
P2P]. Enormous computing resources will be invested in blockchain public P2P
networks.
 However, it seems the 4 walls of the Roof with appropriate modeling will be able to
solve several problems associated with public blockchain network systems.
 How will the real time aspects of Roof be utilized block chain transactions ? Isn't it going
to require enormous power ultimately as scalability increases and with different
customers?
 What is Roof's role in blockchain audit trails ?

Item-6: EVOLVED ROOF SCENARIOS

 Micro roof, portable roof, providing roof on demand, in-house roof stations, segmented
roof models for hard real-time operations. Illustrations needed for real-time and near
real-time models to adapt.
 What will be communication models for drone-mounted Roof operations. Local storage
holding real-time spatio-temporal data acquired by the drones and then releasing it to
the edge ?
 What will be a model in-house local storage backup policy ? What will be these policies
when the Roof is mounted on a car ?
 How to utilize sensor analytics/stream analytics in Roof operations and fine tuning Roof
operations ?
 Role Based Access Control (RBAC) may possibly be a good for Roof and its micro roof
operations. At the same time, Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) will have to be
used. Possibly micro roofs require ABAC, specially if it is into crypto currencies.
 If for any reason Roof system is made to become isolated, disconnected from internet
momentarily---one component may have to be in line with global platforms---always.
 Item-7: IOT Experimental Scenario
 Research and Implementation--there will be gaps, need to be closed.
 Experimental prototypes, Test-Bed and Field Trial Experiences
 Gaps Analysis for real deployment
 Roof and Future Internet architectures
 Roof Standardization and Regulation
 IMPORTANT!
 URGENTly: 5G support to envisioned Roof curricula.
 802.11ah, Bluetooth LE, Zigbee and Wi-SUN Test for IoT/M2M

Item-8: How TO STUDY ROOF COMPUTING

 Wait till the P1931.1 document is released.
 Participate in all the future calls from IEEE-SA on P1931.1
