Course Overview

This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of Occupational Safety & Health in the work environment. Over
the next ten weeks, students will understand the Safety & Health Legislation in the form of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act 2004 (amended 2006), Hazard Recognition and mitigation measures in the workplace, safe work procedures,
and Accident Investigation.

Aims of the course


The certificate in Occupational Safety & Health is the foundation development of a safety professional as students will
interpret the OSH Act and understand basic safety & health terms. This course prepares learners to recognise workplace
hazards and identify mitigating measures. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Review the OSH Act and some of its regulations
2. Evaluate workplace hazards and select mitigating measures using appropriate techniques
3. Introduced to the various types of Safe System of Work (SSoW) and their applications
4. Conduct a preliminary accident investigation using basic techniques

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this course, a student can:
 Conduct a workplace inspection and identify link violations to the various sections of the OSH Act.
 Apply hazard recognition techniques to identifying workplace hazards
 List categories of workplace hazards
 Select appropriate control measures based on the principles of the hierarchy of controls.
 Describe the steps in conducting a job safety analysis
 Determine the application of Lock Out Tag Out System and Standard Operating Procedures
 Identify the causation factors of an accident and determine immediate and root cause
