2. Information on materials and gases

The properties of the material and the quality of the cutting gas
have a decisive effect on the laser cutting result.

2.1 Material

Material used

The cutting and piercing parameters listed in the data collection

have been determined for the following materials:

Copper
Copper must only be cut using oxygen (O2), never nitrogen (N2).
Cutting copper can be complicated due to the reflection caused by
cutting errors (damage to optics). The "MD65 power monitor upper

3. Piercing and approaching

3.1 Piercing type

There are various options for piercing, depending on the material

and the workpiece contour.

The piercing type can be selected in accordance with the

customer’s specific optimization criteria (e.g. optimization for short
production times or for piercing without damaging the material
etc.).

Piercing with ramp cycles

In ramp mode, a start hole for laser cutting can be produced in a

low-impact manner. To do this, the laser power is increased and
maintained over a programmed time interval.

This piercing process ensures that material is not burned away in

an uncontrolled manner.

Up to 99 different piercing cycles can be entered in the laser unit’s

control system.

Parameters The following parameters must be defined for every cycle:

Parameter Min. value Max. value

Ramp cycle number 1 99
Start-up power (P1) 1% 100 %
Working power (P2 - P5) 1 % 100 %
Start-up time (t12) 10 ms 655350 ms
Working time (t23 - t45) 10 ms 655350 ms
Gating frequency (Tf) 100 Hz 99900 Hz
Table 8

The piercing time which is actually run is stated in the technology

table:

Ramp cycles The startup power (P1), power (P2 - P6), startup time (t12), time
(t23 - t56) and gating frequency (Tf) must be adapted to the
material type and thickness.
For application, the customer must store the following ramp cycles
in the laser control system:
Note
The power specifications (P1 - P6) are percentage values and are
listed in order TruFlow 5000/6000 for the individual lasers.
Only the watt specifications in brackets are mandatory and the
corresponding percentages should be determined during manual
laser operation with the respective gating frequency.

Notes on cycle For cycles 22 and 23, the material is actually pierced during t12
22 and 23 and t23 with powers P1 - P3. The piercing hole is then enlarged
with P4 and P5 to create ideal starting conditions for approaching
the contour.
Safety margins are added to times t12 and t23, since the piercing
time for thick materials varies considerably.
The piercing time may not be reduced in the technology table
however, even though the piercing process is usually already
carried out several seconds before the piercing time expires.
Otherwise the piercing hole would no longer be enlarged with
powers P4 and P5.

Normal piercing

Laser power Piercing on high power.

Advantages Gas Advantage

Oxygen Start hole is produced with minimal time
delay.
Oxygen with oil spray fitting Automated material flow, since oiling the
whole sheet of material is no longer
required.
Nitrogen Producing the start hole with nitrogen
prevents formation of oxides when
starting to cut.
Table 10

D452EN-GB.DOC Table of Contents 17

Soft piercing

Laser power Piercing with reduced power (P1 < 100 %), lower gating frequency
and low gas pressure.

Advantages x Gentle and precise piercing.

x Very little slag or weld splatter.
x Only way of creating a start hole of the same size as the
subsequent kerf. All other piercing types produce a cutting
crater of varying size at the start hole.
x A minimum amount of material is thrown up when the start hole
is produced when machining small contours in stainless steel.
This prevents abrasion of the nozzle when machining small
contours and thus ensures process safety.

3.2 Piercing sensor

Background information Safety margins have been added to the piercing time in the
technology tables to ensure process safety.
This is particularly necessary because the shortest possible
piercing time varies as follows depending on the technology:
x From piercing to piercing.
x Depending on the quality of the material.

Two sensor systems TRUMPF uses two sensor systems on its laser flatbed machines to
monitor the piercing process and even - with PierceLine - regulate
it:
x Piercing sensor based on PlasmaLine
Piercing monitoring with plasma recognition. Available for
machines with any software version.
x PierceLine
Optical monitoring and regulation of the piercing process.
A standard at machines that was delivered with the software
update • V03.00.
Selection from the The "Piercing sensor" parameter is used to select the respective
technology table piercing sensor system. It is preset by TRUMPF and should not be
changed.
Parameter Value Definition
Piercing sensor 0 Not active
1 Sensor system with PlasmaLine
2 PierceLine
3 Piercing with ramp cycle
Parameters in the technology table Table 11

New cutting head Machines with PierceLine are equipped with a new cutting head. It
has a special air nozzle made of aluminum.
Make sure therefore that you only use the right cutting head for
your machine. Cutting with the wrong cutting head can result in
serious damage.

Adopting self-defined tables If you have created a program with a self-defined technology table
on a machine without PierceLine and you want to use this
program on a machine with PierceLine, you have to enter the
piercing parameters for the corresponding material preset by
TRUMPF before starting the cutting process.
Programs with standard Trumpf technology tables do not have to
be adapted.

Distance control system The piercing sensors can only be used when the distance control
system is activated.

Piercing gas pressure When using PierceLine, the piercing gas pressure should not be
with PierceLine reduced below the values preset by TRUMPF, as this may
contaminate the lens from underneath.
Exception: Piercing in 20 and 25 mm mild steel (oxygen cutting).

3.3 Approach strategies

In order to avoid damage to the contour from piercing, the material

is pierced a few millimeters to one side of the contour. The contour
is then approached using various strategies depending on the
material, material thickness and contour size.

Normal approach

With a normal approach, cutting takes place straight from the start
hole with the cutting parameters from the appropriate technology
table.

Reduced approach

The contour is approached at a reduced speed. The cutting head

remains at a raised nozzle distance and is only positioned to
cutting distance after covering the approach distance.

Cutting
standoff

Reduced approach with raised nozzle distance Fig. 26594EN

Approach with precut

With an approach with precut, a few millimeters are cut at reduced

cutting speed following piercing. The number of millimeters
depends on the material thickness.
The beam then returns to the start hole using the last active
positioning speed and the contour is then approached and cut with
the parameters from the appropriate technology table.

4. Vaporizing

4.1 Foil on stainless steel

Background If the foil does not adhere well, there is a danger that the strong
gas flow could penetrate between the foil and the material during
high-pressure cutting of steel; the foil could become inflated as a
result.
To prevent this, it is possible to vaporize foils prior to piercing and
cutting the material.

Operating principle The foil can either be vaporized in the area around the start hole
only, or, in the case of poorly adhering foils, the whole contour is
traveled and an approx. 3 mm path is vaporized before cutting.
Note
If necessary, a thinner vaporization track can be applied by
reducing the cutting distance.

Parameters The parameters are independent of the material thickness.

Parameter Value
Vaporizing nozzle distance [mm] 20
Laser power [W] 250
Gating frequency [Hz] 10000
Cutting speed [m/min] 10
Cutting gas N2
Cutting gas pressure [bar] 2
Table 12
Note
In TruTops Laser / ToPs 100 with version 6.0 and higher, a circle
with a diameter of 8 mm is vaporized when "Vaporize start hole" is
selected. The same parameters are used here as for "Vaporize
contour". There is thus no longer a value associated with "Vaporize
start hole".

Aluminum Foils currently available for aluminum do not adhere well to the
surface of the material. The parameters in the technology tables
can be used as starting points.

4.2 Scale layer on mild steel

To remove a scale layer from mild steel, the following parameters

apply (regardless of material thickness):

Parameter Value
Vaporizing nozzle distance [mm] 20
Laser power [W] 180
Gating frequency [Hz] 2000
Cutting speed [m/min] 4
Cutting gas O2
Cutting gas pressure [bar] 2
Table 13

A scale-free path 1 mm - 1.5 mm wide is produced.

5. Marking

Material parts are marked by a change in color on the material

surface.
Since only a minimum of material is removed, markings are no
longer visible after enameling.

22 Table of Contents D452EN-GB.DOC

6. Point marking

In point marking, a dot-shaped depression is made in the material

surface.

This can be done in two ways:

x Geometric point marking.
x Dot point marking.

TruTops Laser In the TruTops Laser programming system, "Point marking

geometry", is selected as standard for mild steel and stainless
steel, and "Dot point marking" for aluminum.

6.1 Geometric point marking

When point marking mild steel and stainless steel, the control
system must travel two small circles for every single dot mark.
For mild steel, the same circle with a diameter of 0.6 mm is
traveled twice.
In the case of stainless steel, two concentric circles are
programmed. The first is traveled with a diameter of 0.3 mm and
the second with a diameter of 0.6 mm.
Note
A deposit which can be removed with a paper towel in the case of
mild steel is formed on the material surface during point marking.
In the case of stainless steel, the deposit sticks more firmly to the
material surface. It is removed during drilling by the cutting edges
of the drill without causing the drill to run off center in the process.

6.2 Dot point marking

With point marking, a start hole is produced over a ramp cycle with
reduced power.

7. Cutting functions

7.1 SprintLine

Description In SprintLine, the timing of the control procedures for piercing,

cutting and positioning to the next contour in the sequence are
optimized.
Note
With software update 4.70 and higher, all processes are auto-
matically carried out with SprintLine even if "Normal processing" is
specified in the NC program.

Laser power Laser power is either kept constant or controlled via a ramp cycle
depending on the type of piercing programmed (normal, soft) and
the available piercing sensor (none, PlasmaLine piercing
recognition, PierceLine).

Advantages With SprintLine, the program run-times are reduced when laser
cutting.
The greatest time advantages are gained for parts which have a
number of contours with small distances between them.

FocusLine setting value When cutting large contours in material thickness up to 4 mm, the
same setting value is used for cutting and piercing (as far as is
technologically possible). This guarantees the shortest possible
machining time for a part.
If you change the setting value for quality optimization, you also
have to set the setting value for normal piercing to the same value.
Note
In most tables, the various setting values for cutting and piercing
are provided as standard. This is always determined by the
technology and for this reason you may not adjust the values given
here.

7.2 PlasmaLine

When high-pressure nitrogen machining stainless steel and

aluminum t 6 mm, the cut can break away despite optimal cutting
parameters e.g. during a change of direction or while cutting over a
support slat.
The molten mass can no longer be expelled downwards, resulting
in a cutting error.
Cutting errors can also be caused by impaired machining para-
meters like nozzle wear, dirty lenses, other material quality etc.
PlasmaLine recognizes a cutting error as it begins and prevents it.

24 Table of Contents D452EN-GB.DOC

Parameters in the The "Plasma sensor on/off" parameter in the technology table must
technology table be set to ON, and values must be entered for "Plasma sensor
threshold 1" and "Plasma sensor threshold 2."
Note
PlasmaLine can only be used when the distance control system is
active.

If PlasmaLine responds too often despite correctly set parameters,

the thresholds can be increased by the following increments. The
maximum acceptable threshold values are 4600 for threshold 1
and 2000 for threshold 2.

Material Increment threshold 1 Increment threshold 2

7.3 FocusLine:
Automatic focus position adjustment

Description FocusLine is a system used to automatically adjust the focus

position. The main component is the autofocus mirror, whose
surface is specifically deformed by cooling water pressure. Thus
the angle of divergence of the laser beam is changed, allowing the
focus to be systematically repositioned upwards or downwards.

Advantages x Automatic adjustment of the focus position to the material type

and thickness

D452EN-GB.DOC Table of Contents 25

7.4 NitroLine (Plasma):
Cutting with a high focus position

Description With NitroLine (Plasma) stainless steel and aluminum are

machined with higher focus positions than with conventional high-
pressure cutting. This results in plasma formation in the kerf, which
in turn results in the laser power being applied to the material more
efficiently, enabling higher cutting speeds.

Area of application Material Laser Application range [mm]

Stainless steel 5000 15 and 20
6000 20 and 25
Aluminum 5000 8 - 12
6000 8 - 15
Table 15

Quality of cut Parts machined with NitroLine (Plasma) display rougher edges
than parts with conventional high-pressure machining.

7.5 Microweld:
Fixing cut parts

Description Certain circumstances during daily production can require that

processed parts are not completely cut out but remain attached to
the sheet.
Microweld is a technique which can be used for attaching the part
to the sheet panel using one or more welding points.

Operating principle One or more welding points are placed on the worked contour as
required.
Cutting is stopped just after the position of the intended welding
point has been reached. The cutting head moves back a little along
the contour already machined and applies a welding point.
Cutting is then resumed from the point where it was interrupted.

Advantages x Fixes small finished parts in place in the sheet.

x Preventing contours from tipping up after being cut free.
x Fixing long and narrow parts to the sheet which would
otherwise arch upwards due to the heat and could lead thereby
to a collision.
x Only slight damage to the contour, which generally does not
necessitate post processing.
x Parts can be released relatively easily from the sheet panel.

26 Table of Contents D452EN-GB.DOC

7.6 Compressed-air cutting (optional)

Compressed-air cutting uses filtered compressed air as the cutting

gas. The machine needs to be equipped with additional compo-
nents for the compressed-air cutting option.
The precise specifications can be taken from the installation
requirements of your machine.

Processing information When cutting with compressed air, please observe the following
information:
x The cutting edge is rougher than with high pressure oxygen or
nitrogen machining.
x The cutting edge of stainless steel oxidizes.
x Plasma formation may occur with some material types and
thickness.

7.7 High quality cutting (TruFlow 5000)

"High quality cutting" is a special cutting process which enables a

finer cutting edge than with conventional high pressure nitrogen
machining or with HiLas Plus when machining large contours in 10
- 20 mm stainless steel.

This is usually done by adjusting the FocusLine setting dimensions

and at the same time reducing the cutting speed.

D452EN-GB.DOC Table of Contents 27

7.8 FlyLine

What is FlyLine? FlyLine is a machining strategy that helps you to save a conside-
rable amount of time when machining certain sheet types. FlyLine
is particularly effective for hole grids. The most important features
of FlyLine are:
x Laser beam is switched on and off on-the-fly with a high
degree of position accuracy. Axes are not stopped when laser
is switched on and off.
x Fragmentation of individual right-angle contours located along
a single line. This makes it possible to avoid corner machining.
The speed is only reduced in the few instances where the
direction is changed.

Area of application Material Machining Application range

[mm]
Mild steel High speed 1 - 1.5
Oxygen 1
Stainless steel High speed 1
Aluminum High speed 1 - 1.5
High-pressure nitrogen 1
Table 16

Your advantage: Using FlyLine allows you to achieve drastic reduction of machining
substantially shorter times in a wide number of instances. The more contours there are
machining times in a part, the greater the time savings that can be obtained using
FlyLine.

Prerequisite The FlyLine is available on machines with software version 4.70 or

higher.

TruTops The FlyLine function is supported by TruTops Laser / ToPs 100

version 5.4 and higher.

Technology tables The standard tables can be used for FlyLine cutting of mild steel
and stainless steel.
Separate tables labeled with the "FC" suffix on their names are
used for aluminum (e.g. "T2D-6262FC").

28 Table of Contents D452EN-GB.DOC

7.9 Nozzle changer (optional)

Nozzle changes are necessary if there is a change in the material

or the material thickness, or if the nozzle is worn. For this reason,
there are two possibilities when operating in automated systems
without personnel; either programs are run which do not require
nozzle changes, or you must expect waiting/tool setup which result
from manual nozzle changes.

Automatic nozzle change With the TRUMPF nozzle changer, changing nozzles is no longer
an issue.
The nozzle changer is programmed to change nozzles
automatically, when required:
x When changing materials.
x When changing to other material thicknesses.
x When the nozzle is worn.

New technology tables In order to reduce the number of cutting head replacements for
processing without personnel, new data has been determined for a
few material thicknesses for the 7.5" cutting head in the
TruFlow 5000. For the TruFlow 6000, the 7.5" cutting head is
already used as standard over a greater range of material
thicknesses.
The new tables are labeled accordingly in the collection of data.

Restrictions In the separate technology tables for the nozzle changer, the
cutting speed was partially reduced and, for material thicknesses of
8 mm and greater, more burring may occur.
Only use this data if you would like to operate without personnel in
connection with a nozzle changer and are prepared to accept the
restrictions listed above.
Note
The restrictions only apply for the separate tables in the TruFlow
5000. For the restrictions with the TruFlow 6000 please read the
footnotes of the corresponding standard tables.

10. Working with technology tables

Technology data for laser cutting (e.g. material thickness, cutting

gas type or gating frequency) are required for executing an NC
program on the machine. This data is read in from technology
tables stored in the control system.

10.1 Display at the machine

For software update V03.11 and higher, technology table values on

the machine are displayed in two columns on series
TruLaser 5030 classic, 5040 and 5060 machines.

Two-column display The values in the left-hand column can be adapted as before. The
right column displays the corresponding TRUMPF standard para-
meter. These cannot be changed.

Display at the machine Fig. 36881EN

Deviations When a value in the left column deviates from the default value,
the default value is highlighted in dark gray (here: "Reduced nozzle
distance"). In this way you can quickly record deviations and
correct them if needed.

10.3 Parameters

In the following, the cutting parameters are briefly explained.

Note
Not all of the parameters specified here are also displayed in the
rear part of the table. You will find them on the machine display.

General parameters Parameter Description

Material thickness Material thickness in [mm].
Lens Focal length of the installed lens in [inches].
FocusLine characteristic Number of the FocusLine system’s characteristic
curve curve.

Table 23

Cutting the contour Parameter Description

FocusLine setting The setting value is the position of the focus in
dimension relation to the nozzle tip.
The following applies thereby:
Setting dimension = focus position – cutting
distance
Focus position = position of the focus in relation to
E<0 E=0 E>0 the upper edge of the sheet
Note
No setting values for bandwidths, but rather
definite setting values are given in the tables.
These setting values are empirical values of many
machines.
It may nevertheless be necessary to make adjust-
ments in some cases.
Beam diameter The diameter of the laser beam can be changed
between 12 and 18 mm. For laser output in excess
of 5000 W, the following graph applies for the
minimum diameter:

Gas type Cutting gas used.

Kerf Width of the kerf in [mm]. This value is used for the
kerf correction.
Laser output Laser output in [W].
Gating frequency Gating frequency of the laser in operation in [Hz].
Cutting velocity Cutting speed in [m/min].
