MATH 1114 Week 11 Tutorial

1. Find the intersection of A={2,4,6}, B={6,8,10}.

A∩B = {2,4,6}∩{6,8,10} = {6}
2. Assume A={1,3,6,8,10,12}, B={1,4,6,10,13}. Find A È B.
A È B = {1,3,6,8,10,12}U{1,4,6,10,13} = {1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12,4,13}
3. A={1, 3, 5, 7, 9}, B={2, 4, 6, 8, 10}, C=(3, 6, 9, 12, 15}.
Find A È B È C.
A È B È C = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}U{2, 4, 6, 8, 10}U(3, 6, 9, 12, 15} =
= {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15}
4. A={1, 3, 5, 7, 9}, B={2, 4, 6, 8, 10}, C=(3, 6, 9, 12, 15}.
Find A∪(B∩C).
A∪(B∩C) = A U ({2, 4, 6, 8, 10} ∩ {3, 6, 9, 12, 15} )
= A U {6 } = {1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9}
5. There are 9 saxophone players in the band. The number of
saxophone players is 1 less than two times the number of
tuba players. How many tuba players are in the band?
S=9
S = 2t - 1
9 = 2t - 1
9 + 1 = 2t -1 + 1
10 = 2t
10 / 2 = 2t / 2
5=t
6. Find three consecutive even numbers whose sum is 234.
a) First even number is x, second even number is x+2, third
even number is x + 2 + 2
b) X + x + 2 + x + 4 = 234
c) 3x +6 = 234
d) 3x + 6 - 6 = 234 - 6

e) 3x = 228
f) 3x / 3 = 228/3
g) X = 76, second is 76+2 (78), third is 76 + 4 (80)
7. John has $5,502 in his savings account. That is $30 less than
six times the amount in his chequing account. How much
money does John have in his chequing account?
a) S = $5502, S = -30 + 6c
b) $5502 = 6c - $30
c) $5502 + $30 = 6c - $30 + $30
d) $5532 = 6c
e) $922 = c
8. The perimeter of a rectangle is 64 centimeters. The length is
4 centimeters less than the triple the width. What are the two
dimensions of the rectangle in centimeters?
a) P = 64cm, l = -4 + 3w, Remember p = 2l + 2w
b) 2l + 2w = 64, l = 3w - 4. Use substitution method
c) 2 * (3w - 4) + 2w = 64
d) 6w - 8 + 2w = 64
e) 8w -8 = 64
f) 8w - 8 + 8 = 64 + 8
g) 8w = 72
h) 8w / 8 = 72 / 8
i) W = 9
j) 2l + 2w = 64
k) 2l + 2 * 9 = 64
l) 2l +18 - 18 = 64 - 18
m) 2l = 46

n) L = 23
o) Check: 2 * 23 + 2 * 9 = 46 + 18 = 64 = Perimeter.

9. Lila received a raise of 2.5% of her monthly salary. The

amount of her raise was $15 per month. What was her
monthly salary before her raise? (Round to the nearest cent.)
2.5% = $15
100% = $x
2.5% * $x = 100% * $15
0.025x = $15
0.025x /0.025 = $15 / 0.025
X = $600.00
10. A pair of boots was on sale for $95.00. They originally cost
$200.00. What was the percent discount? (Round
to 1/10 percent if necessary.)
a) Original is $200, sale price is $95
b) Discount = (Original - Sale) / Original
c) Discount = (200 - 95) / 200
d) Discount = 105/200
e) Discount = 52.5%
