A. Recall

The students are expected to recall about the General

Axiomatic Structure of Mathematical Structure and how
to identify the elements and relationship of the elements
in each axiom system.

B. Motivation
Activity Title: Pair it Up!
Methodology:
1. Post triangles with different side and angle measures
on the board. Prepare as many triangles as possible and
make sure that there are several congruent pairs.
2. Ask a random student to match a pair he or she thinks
are congruent.
3. Ask the student to explain why he or she thinks the
pair of triangles are congruent.
4. Repeat for as many students as desired.

C. Discussion
● Congruent Triangles
Two triangles are congruent if all of their corresponding
sides and interior angles are congruent.

Example:
Since 𝐿𝑂̅̅ ≅ 𝐻𝐴̅,̅ 𝐿𝐺̅̅ ≅ 𝐻𝑌̅,̅ 𝑂𝐺̅̅ ≅ ̅𝐴𝑌̅,̅ and ∠𝑂𝐿𝐺 ≅
∠𝐴𝐻𝑌, ∠𝐿𝑂𝐺 ≅ ∠𝐻𝐴𝑌, ∠𝑂𝐺𝐿 ≅ ∠𝐴𝑌𝐻, we say that
the two triangles are congruent.

For corresponding parts, we use the relation symbol ↔.

For instance, since 𝐿𝑂 corresponds to 𝐻𝐴, we say that
𝐿𝑂 ↔ 𝐻𝐴. Moreover, in stating the congruence of two
triangles, their names are usually stated accordingly
based on the corresponding vertices.

● Included Side - common side of two interior angles in

a polygon
Example: Ab is the included side of angle CAB and
angle CBA

● Included Angle - angle made by two sides with a

common vertex in a polygon
Example: ∠𝐶𝐴𝐵 is the included angle of sides 𝐶𝐴̅̅ and
𝐴𝐵̅.̅
● SSS (Side-Side-Side) Triangle Congruence Postulate
If three sides of one triangle are congruent to the
corresponding sides of another triangle, then the two
triangles are congruent.

Example:
Since all corresponding sides of the two triangles are
congruent, ∆𝐶𝐵𝐴 ≅ ∆𝐹𝐸𝐷 by SSS Triangle Congruence
Postulate.

● SAS (Side-Angle-Side) Triangle Congruence

Postulate
If two sides and the included angle of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding two sides and included
angle of another triangle, then the two triangles are
congruent.
Example:
Since ̅𝐸𝐹̅̅ ≅ 𝐼𝐾̅,̅ 𝐷𝐹̅̅ ≅ ̅𝐽𝐾̅,̅ and ∠𝐸𝐹𝐷 ≅ ∠𝐼𝐾𝐽, it follows
that ∆𝐸𝐹𝐷 ≅ ∆𝐼𝐾𝐽 by SAS Triangle Congruence
Postulate.
● ASA (Angle-Side-Angle) Triangle Congruence
Postulate
If two angles and the included side of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding two angles and included
side of another triangle, then the two triangles are
congruent.

Example: In the figure, we see that ∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 ≅ ∠𝑈𝑇𝑉,

∠𝑀𝑂𝑃 ≅ ∠𝑉𝑈𝑇, and 𝑂𝑃̅̅ ≅ 𝑈𝑇̅.̅ We can say that ∆𝑂𝑃𝑀
≅ ∆𝑈𝑇𝑉 by ASA Triangle Congruence Postulate.

● AAS (Angle-Angle-Side) Triangle Congruence

Theorem
If two angles and a non-included side of one triangle are
congruent to the corresponding two angles and a non-
included side of another triangle, then the triangles are
congruent.
Example:
In the figure, we see that ∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 ≅ ∠𝑈𝑇𝑉, ∠𝑀𝑂𝑃 ≅
∠𝑉𝑈𝑇, and 𝑂𝑀̅̅̅ ≅ 𝑈𝑉̅.̅ We can say that ∆𝑂𝑃𝑀 ≅ ∆𝑈𝑇𝑉
by AAS Triangle Congruence Theorem.

D. Developing Mastery
Example 1:
If ∆𝐺𝐴𝑅 ≅ ∆𝑃𝐴𝐻, identify their corresponding sides
and angles

Solution:
1. Determine the corresponding vertices of the two
triangles based on the congruence statement.

2. Using the corresponding vertices, determine the

corresponding sides of the two triangles.

3. Identify the corresponding angles using the

congruence statement.

Therefore, the corresponding sides of ∆𝐺𝐴𝑅 and ∆𝑃𝐴𝐻

are 𝑮𝑨̅̅ ↔ 𝑷𝑨̅,̅ 𝑹𝑨̅̅ ↔ 𝑯𝑨̅,̅̅ and 𝑮𝑹̅̅ ↔ 𝑷𝑯̅,̅̅ while their
corresponding angles are ∠𝑮𝑨𝑹 ↔ ∠𝑷𝑨𝑯, ∠𝑮𝑹𝑨 ↔
∠𝑷𝑯𝑨, and ∠𝑹𝑮𝑨 ↔ ∠𝑯𝑷𝑨.
