EXAMPLE
Solve the equation x2 4x 3 0
SOLUTION
x2 4x 3 0
If (x 1)(x 3) 0 then one of the brackets
(x 1)(x 3) 0
must be equal to 0.
x 1 0 or x 3 0
So, x 1 or x 3
EXAMPLE
Solve the equation 2x2 9x 5 0
SOLUTION
2x2 9x 5 0
(2x 1)(x 5) 0
2x 1 0 or x 5 0
1
So, x 2 or x 5
Some quadratics contain only two terms, not three. If the constant term at the
end is missing, then all you need to do is take out a common factor of x.
EXAMPLE
Solve the equation 10x2 4x 0
SOLUTION
10x 2 4x 0
2x(5x 2) 0
2x 0 or 5x 2 0
2
So, x 0 or x 5
If, instead, the middle term is missing, then you can simply solve to find x2.
Then take the square root of both sides to find x. Remember to allow for both
positive and negative answers.
EXAMPLE
Solve the equation 5x 2 80 0
SOLUTION
Alternatively, by factorising:
5x 2 80 0
5x 2 80 5x2 80 0
5(x2 16) 0
80
x 2 5(x 4)(x 4) 0
5
and so x 4 or x 4
x 2 16
Square rooting both sides gives:
x 4 or x 4
TEST YOURSELF

7 x 2 7x 12 0 8 x 2 8x 15 0 9 x 2 2x 8 0
10 x 2 4x 4 0 11 2x 2 3x 1 0 12 2x 2 5x 3 0
