1. An experiment was carried out to determine whether three given compounds, X, Y


and Z respectively, were ionic compounds or covalent compounds.

The steps taken were as follows:


Step 1 : Two spatulas of X, Y and Z were respectively placed in a crucible.
Step 2 : Each substance was tested for electrical conductivity by using the apparatus
as shown in Figure 3. The switch was turned on and the bulb was checked to
see if it lit up.
Step 3 : Step 2 was repeated using molten X and Y respectively.
Step 4: Step 2 was repeated using an aqueous solution of Z.
