ABSTRACT

In the process of urbanization, motor and traffic growth, road accidents have increased
considerably. This research will therefore improve existing road safety by using the method
of iRAP (International Road Assessment Program) on a stretch of Surat city, taking into
account existing land use for the same study area. Based on the field survey results on the
roads and the accidental data acquired from the police stations, the required improvement
will be proposed. The aim of study is to prepare planning proposal for improving the road
safety and to reduce/optimize the road accidents by using the iRAP methodology. Road
sections were screened by the star ratings through the ViDA software which will give the
spcefic problem on selected stretch and key road safety issues were identified. Number of
injuries and fatalities can be minimized if the countermeasures adopted by the urban
planner, policy makers and design institute quantitatively for improving the designs and
planning strategy like proposed a land use with all roads passing form that area having a
pedestrian’s facilities as well as strict traffic management. Therefore, to reduce this
scenario the iRAP ranking will be helpful to find out the problem related to the road safety
of the existing road and proposal of course the better road with good iRAP star rating.
