Associate Dean Regional in Dec 2018
- Programme office Regional resumed

Supporting Healthcare Workers in the
Pacific – STHWP Project supported by DFAT
PURPOSE Pacific Regional Clinical Services &
1. Strengthens re-engagement of
CMNHS with the region SPC Health Workforce
Improvement Program (PRCSHWIP)
2. Informs development of
academic programs that address
PICs demands/needs

3. Promotes partnership and


collaboration with sister academic
org, corporate sector, and DPs PICs

ACTIVITIES UNDERWAY
1. Scoping in PICs – Solomon Is, Vanuatu,
Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga completed RACS FNU
2. Next will be Marshalls, FSM, Palau, Samoa,
Cook Is + f-up visits that emerge from 1
above
3. Activities for Regional students within
CMNHS
4. Welcome function for regional students set
for 11/4/19

Key achievements 2018 / early 2019
■ Externally Reviewed key academic ■ Scoping mission to Tonga, Solomon Is,
programmes in 2018 – MBBS, Public Health, Vanuatu, Kiribati and Tuvalu done – follow up
Health Services Management activities have emerged out of these
missions
■ Developed new academic programmes – PG
level: Family medicine, MPH-NCDs, ■ Expected outcomes:
Dermatology
- Better understanding of PIC
■ Underway to be finalised-delivered: PG contextual and health issues
Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) PGDip / - MOUs/MOAs signed
Master level – looks good to start in 2020 - CMNHS delivers programmes that
align with PIC needs
■ MOUs with Ministries of Health (Solomon Is, - Improved delivery of health services
Tonga, Vanuatu in the pipeline…) in PICs, and
■ MOU with other organisations (academic, - Improved health outcomes in the
CSOs, technical organisations..) region

■ Support to KITP (Kiribati)

Challenges
■ Staff shortage – difficulty to recruit
staff.. ? qualifications ? Limited people
with right skillsets … ↑Government
salary levels

■ Responding to demand – need to


accommodate increasing number of
students enrolled to study….
Preference to go blended/online mode
(utilising POHLN stations in PICs) Financially stretched

■ Changing patterns of diseases –


this will influence the type and content
of programs/courses we deliver In most Pacific island countries – dual
epidemic of NCDs + CDs

■ Continue review of academic Technical
