FUNCTIONING OF OSCILLOSCOPE

The oscilloscope provides various functions as mentioned below.

1. Print Key
Press this key to print the current waveform display to a USB printer or to a USB mass storage device.

2. Auto key
When you press Auto key, the oscilloscope will quickly determine which channels are active, and it will
turn these active channels on and scale them to display the input signals.

3. Entry Knob
This is used to select items from menus and input values. Its function changes when different menu is
displayed. The curved arrow symbol to the left of the entry knob illuminates when the entry knob is
active and can be used to select a value.

4. Menu keys
When you press a menu key on the front panel, the oscilloscope will display the corresponding menu
on the right side of the screen. The menu shows the options that are available when you press the soft
keys directly to the Getting Started right of the screen. Total six menu keys available:

UTILITY:
Activates the system functions, such as Language setup, I/O setup, and Print setup etc.

MEASURE:
Performs automated measurements of waveforms.

ACQUIRE:
This lets you set the oscilloscope to acquire in Normal, Peak Detect, or Average mode, and lets you
select Real Time or Equivalent sampling.

SAVE/LOAD
You can save your current setup and waveform to the oscilloscope’s internal memory or to a USB mass
storage device and then retrieve the setup or waveform later.

CURSOR:
Press the cursor key to activate the cursors that you can use for making custom voltage or time
measurement or scope signals.

DISPLAY:
You can change the appearance of waveforms and the display screen, select the color schemes and
adjust the contrast etc.

5. Run Control keys

The Run/Stop key will illuminate in green when the oscilloscope is looking for a trigger. When the
trigger mode is set to Normal mode, the display will not update until a trigger is found. If it is set to
Auto mode, the oscilloscope looks for trigger, and if no trigger is found, it will be triggered
automatically and the waveform of input signals will be shown immediately. Press Rum/Stop key again
to stop acquiring data and the run/stop key will illuminate in red.
6. Vertical Controls
You can use the vertical position control knob to move the waveforms up or down on the display. There
is one vertical knob for each channel. You can press the channel key CH1 or CH2 to switch the channel
on or off, or access the channel’s menu in the soft keys.

7. Horizontal Controls
When the oscilloscope is running, this knob lets you set the acquisition window relative to the trigger
point. When the oscilloscope is stopped, you can turn this knob to span through the data horizontally.

8. LCD display.
The 320 x 240 matrix (5.7 inch) LCD displays captured channel waveforms, setup information,
measurement results and soft keys for setting up parameters.

9. Bandwidth
When Bandwidth limit is on, the max BW for the channel is approximately 40 MHz. For waveform
with frequency below this, turning BW limit on removes unwanted high frequency noise from the
waveform. The BW limit also limits the triggers signal path of any channel that has BW limit turned on.

10. MATH: Select a formula from the math menu: CH1+CH2, CH1-CH2 or FFT (Fast Fourier Transform).
You can convert a time-domain signal into its frequency components by our advanced FFT math
function. The Math menu contains the following items by pressing F1 softkey after math function is
selected. The display of mathematical waveform can be disabled by pressing MATH pushbutton again.

FFT Operation: Push the MATH button to select the FFT function. The source channel and window
algorithm can be selected. Press MATH pushbutton again to disable. Channel selection : selects the
channel which assigned as the FFT spectrum.

11. AUTOSET : Press the pushbutton to analyze the unknown signal quickly. Then, the instrument sets
up the vertical, horizontal, and trigger to best display that signal. The “Autoset” function can not
process a signal which under either frequency of 30Hz or 30mV.

12. XY PLOT - Select XY display format if user want to show channel 1 in horizontal axis and channel 2 in
vertical axis. The XY display controls as following: The channel 1 VOLTS/DIV knob and vertical
POSITION knob controls the horizontal scale and position. The channel 2 VOLTS/DIV knob and
vertical POSITION knob controls the vertical scale and position.

13. ACQUIRE : Press this push button to select the different acquire mode : Sample, Peak detect, and
Average. Acquisition is the process of sampling the analog input signal and converting it into digital
format afterward, assembling it into a waveform record finally.
In sample mode, the instrument generates a record point by saving the first sample during each
acquisition interval.
The “Peak-Detect” mode stores the minimum and maximum values (pairs) for each acquisition
intervals.
The average mode selects the number of waveform acquisitions that are averaged to generate the
display waveform.

EXAMPLE : Observe two different frequency input signals and monitor their amplitude, peak values,
average values, frequency, duty cycle and rise time. Also mention how to save the waveform.

SOLUTION : Following steps are to be followed to observe the waveform.

Measure :
1. Connect the probe to channel 1 and see the output waveform.
2. Click on Measure, then Voltage and you will see several options – Peak to Peak, Amplitude, Max,
Min, High, Low, Average, RMS. Click on these options to see their corresponding values on the
screen as shown below. Use cursors to manually measure Peak to Peak, Max, Min and time
period /frequency of the signal.
3. Then click again on measure pushbutton, select time option to measure parameters like Frequency,
Period, Rise time, Fall time, width, Duty, Delay etc. Click on these options to see their
corresponding values on the screen as shown below.
3. Add/subtract two different frequency signal (generate from signal generator) and observe the
resultant frequency . [first trigger the signal such that you can see steady signals]. Also observe XY plot of
the same.

5. FFT Analysis : (Frequency spectrum of the given signal)

Push the Math button to perform the FFT analysis. Then choose the operate option and select FFT. FFT
bar is displayed on the screen and you can change the settings accordingly.

Save the waveform :

1. Connect the pen drive to the oscilloscope.

2. Press the Save/Load push button on the DSO.
3. Click on external storage, Then New and click on new file.
4. Select the required format (.BMP, .CSV, waveform ) and give a suitable file name using the enter
character option. Then press Save option.

* Next week submit the record with all of your observed/recorded

waveforms with your inferences. Keep common record for all the
experiments. Late submission of record leads to reduction in total
marks.

* Bring formatted pen drive of 2GB (Each week make sure to format the
pen drive before inserting in to DSO)
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1. Always wear rubber/plastic sole shoes while working in the laboratories. Do not wear
slippers/chappals.

2. Do not touch any naked wire or terminal in the laboratories.

3. While performing the experiment get the circuit checked by a staff member before you switch on
