Year 2 Maths – Level Placement Check

Please use this checklist to help you decide if your child is ready for Year 2 Mathematics at Wolsey
Hall. Your child should have some knowledge of (and be able to do) most things on this checklist
prior to starting Year 2 Mathematics. This is only to be used as a guide and not to be used as the
only factor in placing your child in a specific year group. You should also consider maturity,
motivation and work ethic. We want your child to find the best fit where they will be able to flourish.

Can your child: Yes


Count up to 100, forwards and backwards from a given number?
e.g. Ask your child to start at 55 and count to 100.

Say what number is 1 more or 1 less than any 2-digit number?


e.g. Ask your child what is 1 more than 67? 1 less than 50?

Know the pairs of numbers which make 20?


e.g. 16 + __ = 20; 20 – 9 = __, etc?

Count in 2s from 2, 5s from 5 and 10s from 10?

Understand and use an array like the one below to work out that:
4x2=8 2x4=8 8÷4=2 8÷2=4

Show an sawareness of measurement by using language such as heavier,


lighter, longer, shorter, full and empty?

Recognise halves and quarters in shapes such as:

Tell the time to the hour and half past the hour?

Recognise and name some 2D and 3D shapes?
