Choral Reading Method

What is Choral Reading??


Choral reading is the act of multiple voices reading aloud together in unison with
a whole class or group of students. Choral reading helps build students' fluency, self-
confidence, and motivation. Because students are reading aloud together, students who
may ordinarily feel self-conscious or nervous about reading aloud have built-in
support.This strategy requires repeated reading of text out loud, which proves to provide
many benefits for both mainstream. Choral reading can be used to help students interpret
and become experts of poetry, or it can be used across the curriculum to help students
learn subject content.

Why Choral Reading??


The main reason why we choose Choral Reading as our method is because Choral
Reading can provide less skilled readers the opportunity to practice and receive support
before being required to read on their own. It also can provides a model for fluent reading
as students listen, and It helps improve the ability to read sight words.

There are some steps to apply this method in your class :

1. Select an existing text. take turns reading different pages


2. read the entire passage together by providing examples of reading that will arouse
interest in learning to read.
3. Create a variety of appearances such as sound composition, speaker differences,
body movements, style, and high and low voices
4. Demonstrating it together. Boys read lines 1-3, and girls read lines 4-6
5. Speaking of content, allow students to participate.
6. The teacher gives an example of how to read a sentence, then the students read the
sentence together
7. Once students are interested, the emphasis is on memorizing the text by heart.

As a one of the recommended method for reading in K13 curriculum Choral Reading has
advantage and disadvantage there are :

Advantage :
a. Helping students learn to decode.
b. Developing effective and fluent read aloud skill.
c. Improving sight vocabulary.
d. Helping students learn to pronounce new word by hearing others reading aloud at
the same time.
e. Helping students understand rhythm, meter, patterns, rhymes and characters.
f. Demonstrates the importance of oral tradition
g. Helping students learn to understand the meaning of words

Disadvantage
a. The teacher cannot observe the students one by one.
b. No one really knows if the student makes an error reading
