Introduction:

Mathematics has always been considered a fundamental subject in the academic curriculum, especially for students
in grade 10 level. The ability to understand and apply various mathematical concepts can have a significant impact on
a student's overall academic success. However, despite the significance of math, it is not uncommon for students to
struggle with the subject and perform poorly on exams. In particular, the third quarter math examination can be
particularly challenging for students. This mini research aims to explore the reasons behind the poor performance of
students who failed in the 3rd quarter math examination in grade 10 level. The findings of the study will highlight the
key factors that contribute to a student's poor performance in math and the analysis will include the measures of
position for grouped data.

II. Statement of the problem

The study will investigate the results of the examination in Mathematics given to the G10 WEST class during the third
quarter period. This will be conducted in Tubod Integrated School , Tubod Galas Dipolog City Zamboanga Del Norte
during the school year 2022-2023.

Specifically, the study will answer the following;

a. What is the frequency distribution of the scores of the Grade 10 WEST students in their third quarter Math
Examination?

b. How many students passed the third quarter Math Examination if the passing score belongs to the third
quartile?

c. What is the 5th decile score and 95th percentile score of the results in the third quarter Math Examination of
G10 WEST class?

III. Presentation of data

Table 1: Frequency Distribution Table on the scores of G10 WEST class in their third quarter Examination in
Mathematics.
Score Frequency Lower Boundary Less Cumulative Frequency

40-44 0 39.5 30

35-39 0 34.5 30

30-34 1 29.5 30

25-29 0 24.5 29

20-24 5 19.5 29

15-19 8 14.5 24

10-14 10 9.5 16

5-9 5 4.5 6

0-4 1 0.5 1

IV. Data Analysis and Interpretation

Third Quartile Score:

Determine the position of the third quartile score that is:

Position of Q3 class= kN/4=3(30)/4=90/4=22.5

This means we need to find a class interval where the 22.5th score is contained . Note that the 17th to 24th scores
belong to the 15-19 class interval , thus the 22.5th score also contained therein.
