(a) (1 mark) The reaction between potassium superoxide (KO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is used
as a source of O2 and absorber of CO2 in self-contained breathing equipment used by rescue
workers. The relevant chemical equation for this process is given below. Write on the lines

forms iron(III) oxide as the product is classified as a redox reaction.

(a) Acrylonitrile, C3H3N, the building block for polyacrylonitrile fibres and a variety of
plastics, is produced by the reaction shown below;

2C3H6(g) + 2NH3(g) + 3O2(g) → 2C3H3N(g) + 6H2O(g)

Sarah wants to prepare 2.58 g of C3H3N.


(i) (1 mark) Show that the molar mass of C3H3N is 53.064 g mol-1.

(ii) (1 mark) Calculate the amount of moles of C3H3N in 2.58 g of C3H3N.

(iii) (2 marks) Calculate the number of H atoms in 2.58 g of C3H3N. NA = 6.02 × 1023mol-1.

(iv) (2 marks) Calculate the mass of O2 required to prepare 2.58 g of C3H3N.

(b) Iron (III) chlorite reacts with Cl2 as shown by the following equation to give chlorine
dioxide and iron(III) chloride;

2Fe(ClO2)3(s) + 3Cl2(aq) → 6ClO2(g) + 2FeCl3(aq)


M(Fe(ClO2)3 ) = 258.2 g mol-1. M(Cl2) 70.9 g mol-1.

In an experiment, 3.54 g of Cl2 is reacted with 9.88 g of Fe(ClO2)3.

(i) (2 marks) Show by an appropriate calculation which reagent is in excess. Show


working.

(ii) (1½ marks) Calculate the mass of excess reagent remaining after the reaction is
completed.

(iii) (1½ marks) Calculate the mass of FeCl3 produced. M(FeCl3) = 191.35 g mol-1.

(c) The main ingredient in washing soda is Na2CO3. A student used a contaminated washing
soda sample in a titration.
The equation for the reaction is given below.

Na2CO3(aq) + 2HCl(aq) → 2NaCl(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

The student dissolved 0.252 g of contaminated washing soda in 30 mL of water and


titrated it with a 0.154 mol L-1 HCl solution.

He recorded the following data in his lab book.

(b) Barium sulphate is a sparingly soluble salt that has a KSP of 1.1×10-10.

(ii) (2 marks) If a solution has a Ba2+ concentration of 1×10-5 mol.L-1 and a sulphate
